1. Barkley's big splash
The trade: Suns get F Charles Barkley from Philadelphia for G Jeff Hornacek, F/C Tim Perry and C Andrew Lang (1992).
What Suns gained: Barkley leads Suns to NBA Finals in first season with the team, winning the NBA MVP award for 1992-93. Named to All-Star team all four seasons in Phoenix.
What Suns lost: Hornacek went on to finish off a solid career with the Utah Jazz, but never regained All-Star status after leaving Phoenix.

2. KJ lands in Phoenix
The trade: Suns get G Kevin Johnson, C/F Mark West, G/F Tyrone Corbin and 2 draft picks from Cleveland for F/C Larry Nance, F/G Mike Sanders and a 1988 draft pick (1988).
What Suns gained: KJ spends the remainder of his career in Phoenix, becoming a Suns icon and earning 3 All-Star bids. The first-round pick from Cleveland was used to select Dan Majerle, another 3-time All-Star and Phoenix favorite.
What Suns lost: Nance is named an All-Star twice for Cleveland.

3. Kidd nabbed from Mavs
The trade: Suns get G Jason Kidd from Dallas for G Michael Finley, G Sam Cassell and F/C A.C. Green (1996).
What Suns gained: Kidd, the 1994-95 Rookie of the Year, helps the Suns reach the playoffs in all 5 season with the team. Kidd is named an All-Star 3 times with Phoenix.
What Suns lost: Finley becomes a big contributor for Dallas and is named to 2 All-Star teams. Cassell bounces around the league, making an impact along the way.

4. Marion draft pick for Nash
The trade: Suns get F Pat Garrity, F Martin Muursepp, Bubba Wells and a draft pick from Dallas for Steve Nash (1998).
What Suns gained: With the draft pick, the Suns will select longtime Suns great Shawn Marion, a 4-time All-Star.
What Suns lost: Steve Nash blossoms with the Mavericks, earning All-Star status twice.

5. Suns dump salaries on NY
The trade: Suns get F Antonio McDyess, G Howard Eisley, G Charlie Ward, F Maciej Lampe, draft rights to G Milos Vujanic and 2 draft picks from New York for G Stephon Marbury, G Anfernee Hardaway and C Cezary Trybanski (2004).
What Suns gained: None of the players/picks make much of an impact for the Suns, but money is freed up to sign Steve Nash in coming offseason.
What Suns lost: The hefty salaries owed to Marbury and Hardaway.

6. JJ for Rogers, Delk
The trade: Suns get G Joe Johnson, G Milt Palacio, G Randy Brown and a pick from Boston for G Tony Delk and F Rodney Rogers (2002).
What Suns gained: Johnson makes an impact in 3-plus seasons, averaging 17.1 points in 2004-05, his final year with Phoenix.
What Suns lost: Rogers and Delk wind down their careers without much fanfare. Rogers never regains status had as the 1999-2000 Sixth Man of the Year with the Suns.

7. Suns switch to Diesel fuel
The trade: Suns get C Shaquille O'Neal from Miami for F Shawn Marion and G Marcus Banks (2008).
What Suns gained: The 1999-2000 MVP and a 14-time All-Star center in the twilight of his career. The trade signals a likely switch in offensive strategy.
What Suns lost: Fan-favorite Marion, who ranks among the all-time Suns greats in many statistical categories. The deal is the first major move by first-year GM Steve Kerr.

8. JJ departs, Diaw surprises

What Suns lost: Garrity settles into a decent role for Orlando over the next 9 seasons, peaking in 2001-02 with 11.1 points per game.

What Suns gained: Robey delivers 3 uneventful seasons for the Suns, peaking with 5.6 scoring in 1983-84.
What Suns lost: A 2-time All-Star with the Suns, Johnson helped the Celtics to 2 titles the following 7 seasons. Larry Bird called Johnson "the best I've ever played with."
