I just finished Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers.

I love Gladwell's stuff, and liked this a lot, but it did get to a point toward the end where it was an enough is enough feeling. It starts to feel like he's beating you over the head with his thesis of the truely successfull being the product of opportunity and chance as much as talent and hard work. A point that wasn't exactly profound to me, but Gladwell has a way of making you look at those sort of things in a different way.

I just started Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman. It's a collection of essays, with no narrative, which makes it good bathroom fodder, and for me good for before bed because I can read a chapter and shut down. I've had a few friends tell me I should read his stuff, plus I've listened to him and when his newest book came out, I grabbed with the older stuff to give it a shot.

So far it's pretty entertaining. It's sort of a off kilter look and anylisis of a slew of pop culture elements. Nothing profound, and there's moments when I'm reading and I get the feeling I wouldn't like this guy very much if I met him. He's a little too cool for his own good at times, and feels like he's pushing to make this vague points about what is essentially nonsense. It feels very stream of conciousness, and it's a little like if someone transcribed a cocaine conversation. But if the point he's making is something I can jibe with, and it's on a topic I can get into, like The Real World, it can be pretty entertaining.

Agreed. I had to read it for my Honors Econ class my senior year. we were supposed to read 3 chapters a day and it was just too much to take in. Lots of info, some pretty ugly and unbelievable stuff in there...but a great and interesting read.

I was actually going to buy that, but I decided to keep a few books on my wish list because they make for reasonably priced Christmas gifts for aunts and friends who want to get me something but don't know what and don't want to spend a fortune.

Book of Basketball is awesome. Most thorough basketball book I've ever read. It's 700 pages and I'm about halfway through it. Great book!

just started All the pretty horses by cormac mccarthy. Ive enjoyed the other 2 Ive read, so I figured why not do the trilogy. Dont have much time for pleasure reading (too much ish action) but I'll probably get into this weekend

on a related note, what do people who've read The Road think of the movie coming out? Will it capture the tension and suspense of the book? The preview makes it seem like an action movie, but the book isnt action at all. So much fo it is narration with minimal dialogue.

Im quite sure that it will get me angry and upset over the differences... like 90% of all my favorite novels that are ruined by film adaptation..

I thought no cuntry for old men was a pretty good adaptation of a book. Plus Levon Helm was in it
