Default Derrick Rose an elite defender?

Quote:
More outstanding yet are Rose’s individual defensive numbers. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Rose has allowed just 0.77 points per possession overall on defense this season, an elite mark for any defender, regardless of position. Chris Paul (0.86 points per possession allowed), Rajon Rondo (0.83 PPP allowed), and Russell Westbrook (0.92 PPP allowed) –- all excellent defenders -– have been trumped statistically this year, and by no slim margin. Rose has each of those players handily beat, and boasts a shockingly comprehensive defensive profile.

Thanks to user "nicktheman" for showing this to me.

Thoughts?

I'm just really curious, does this board still have any "Rondo > Rose" posters?

I remember a little while ago, there were a lot of people saying that.

If there are, they're wrong. But it's really calmed down this season. I remember last year anytime you mentioned Rose someone was ready to drop a Rondo>.

The fact that Chicago is one of the best defensive teams helps. For example if an opposing PG passes rose he still has to get past the front line which is probably even better on defense. Most credit should go to the coach. But one thing is for sure, rose is A LOT better on his defense than the last 2 years.

Can the same be said for Rondos defense? Everyone says he's an elite defender...but he's also in a great defensive system.

But yeah you're right. Thibs has done straight up wonders with this team.

Rose isnt in such a bad defensive system himself though. Granted rondos is better.

that being said of course rose>rondo. Anyone who says otherwise is a retard. Rondo is "team specific" good. Put rondo in cleveland and hell do nothing. Put rose in cleveland and he'll do exactly teh same as hes doing now.

Rose is a good defender.

He isn't elite, or a liability....he is good.

I argue with my friend about this once a week, he thinks Rondo is better, I laugh at this, dude is surrounded by an all star team, not hard to put up his assist numbers. As far as Roses defense, he is a good defender, and his coach should be credited,...... he is a defensive minded coach, we saw what he did to Boozer earlier this season for being lazy on D.

props to coach thibs for transforming rose...props to rose of course as well.

he's gone from an awful defender to what i would consider a pretty decent defender. but he's hardly elite yet. but i bet he will become elite within a couple of years.

rose has really transformed his game defensively this year.

What are peoples thoughts on the actual stats in the article? The #s that put him above Paul/Rondo?

It just means that you can cherry pick stats to show almost anything. The article doesn't say how points allowed per possession is calculated. Why should we look at this stat rather than say, drtg, where both paul and rondo are ahead of Rose? How is this stat affected by the quality of the overall team defense? How much does Rose contribute to Chicago's elite defense, and conversely, how much is he helped by it? Knowing precisely how this stat is calculated may go a long way in answering these questions.

What this stat shows, along with other advanced metrics of defensive capability, is that Derrick Rose has improved tremendously, and may possibly be an elite caliber defender at the point guard position.

Rose is obviously the best defensive player at the PG position. The problem is uneducated fans look at meaningless stats like steals per game and arrive at the conclusion that Paul, Westbrook and Rondo are elite defensive PGs (when they aren't even close).

Is it to late to bump my " Derrick Rose will be the best point guard in the NBA " thread?
