Default Wells Makes Good Impression

Charlotte Observer
Quote:
Charlotte Bobcats coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff liked what he heard Thursday from free agent Bonzi Wells.

However, the Bobcats haven't made a contract offer to Wells, a guard-forward, and probably wouldn't until Melvin Ely's status is resolved.

"Our issue first is to work things out for Mel," said Bickerstaff, who's looking into sign-and-trade options for Ely, a restricted free agent. In the alternative, Ely could sign a one-season qualifying offer of about $3 million to stay with the Bobcats.

Wells was in Charlotte on Thursday to speak with the Bobcats' administration and coaching staff.

He had a reputation for being high-maintenance in stays with Portland, Memphis and Sacramento.

"It was a good interview," Bickerstaff said. "We asked tough questions and he fielded them well -- very forthright."

Bickerstaff said Wells was scheduled to visit the Miami Heat on Friday, and has drawn strong interest from the Denver Nuggets.
More than likely it looks like Cats have Ely as the main priority over anyone else. I still can't get an idea of who would trade for Ely and for who.

Question

If Ely re-signs with the Cats, doesn't the team then have to get rid of a player who is already under contract to meet the 15-player roster? And if so, who would that be?

Is tomorrow the dead line to Ely?

Will he be free since Sunday?

No, apparently, according to Bernie, we have a 16 man roster.

I may be wrong here but I think that by the end of training camp each team has to have a 15 man roster with which to begin the regular season.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you look on the Bernie chat transcript I posted, I believe he mentions something about having a 16-man roster to work with for training camp.

Timmeh--you are right about training camp. That will be 'weeding-out' time for the coaches of many of the teams so that they begin the season with 15.
(PS--I ALWAYS read your postings.)

Sweet..thank you....I guess that basically once cut day comes, if we have either Wells or Ely as the 16th man, then probably some low-caliber player like Burleson or Robinson will be cut.

Unhappy

Can anybody understand or justify the possible Cats/Warriors trade involving Mel and GW for a couple of mediocre players along with Wells? Silly me. I thought that GW was untouchable. I'm mystified. I mean, it's not as if we're getting a player the quality of Shaq in return.
