Default Been writing papers and watching TCM all day.

With one week of classes left in this semester, I've really been having to work my ass off to get some papers done for a couple of courses. I turned on the TV, it was on TCM, I don't have a remote in my apartment, long story short...it's been on in the background all day. I watched "God is My Co-Pilot" (decent), "Guys and Dolls" with Brando and Sinatra (odd because I don't generally like musicals), which was pretty good, "Heaven Can Wait" (with Warren Beatty, and it actually was fairly interesting) and now "Citizen Kane" is on. Most of these movies are older than sin but there's been some pretty decent ones.

Anybody watch this channel...ever?

TCM is amazing. Ever since I started watching it, I never watch any of The Movie Network's five channels with all the newer movies.

I also watch AMC sometimes, but they show movies of a lower quality on average.

As for Citizen Kane. The movie is great, but it's the innovation for that time that makes it so influential.

I've never really been into "classic film."

nor have I ever been into classic anything.

I like the new stuff too much to go back in time 50 years and watch **** in black and white. movies are flatout better now from my perspective. they're more realistic, in terms of writing, plot, and picture... the technology is vastly superior. and I find more intellectual variety in the newer stuff.

I'm sure any film buff would...... rebuff me for saying that, tell me I can't appreciate the new stuff without appreciating the classics that led to them. but I just can't bring myself to care. for the same reason I can't like any book written before 1900, for the same reason I always fall asleep during History classes... I just have no desire whatsoever to go back in time. cause I find the now to be way more interesting, because it's, well, happening.

I simply like the older movies more. The best of the best from any era are equal, but the average good movie from the 40's and 50's is better than what we see today imo. I'm not a film buff so it has nothing to do with appreciating the past or whatever...I just find myself able to watch older movies often without falling asleep.

Yeah I share GeeWhiz's problem as well, but to a lesser extent.

I'm aspiring to be a film critic as well, but my teenage hormones got me addicted to the fast-paced action ****, explosives, secksuality, horror movies all that *****.

I've seen Gone with the wind, Apocalypse Now, Exorcist, assorted Charlie Chaplin stuff, In The Heat of the Night (one about the black lawyer) both Godfathers and enjoyed them tremendously... but I can only sit a little bit through.

Been looking at the symbolism, the advantages of camera angles, lighting, shade, storylines, literary parallels, mistakes, ideas etc.

I enjoy reading Randy and TMOGE's post to get a headstart on these kind of things.

Fav Actors are Jean Reno, Denzel, Brando, Eastwood and of course Will Smith

Really hoping to solve this. Recommendations?

To each his own, but you admittedly don't watch older movies...I'm guessing that you haven't seen most of the classics from that time period. Like I said, it's fine if you don't like them, but your claim that movies today don't have the same quality of plot and writing...well. That's just ignorance. How on earth can somebody in the same paragraph say you don't watch them and then immediately follow it up by judging them? If anything, plots are weaker these days because they have all sorts of special effects to rely on.
