Former World Champion Boxer Murdered in Atl.

Quote:
(WSB Radio) Former boxing champion and U.S. Olympian Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in an attempted carjacking in Northwest Atlanta, a police spokesperson said.

Lt. Keith Meadows with the Atlanta police department told WSB Radio, Forrest was putting air in the tires of his Jaguar around 11 p.m. Saturday at a gas station on White Hall St. at McDaniel Blvd. Investigators said at least two men jumped out of a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo and tried to steal Forrest's car. The boxer had a gun and started running after the suspects.

"The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase," Lt. Meadows said. "At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head."

Lt. Meadows said Forrest was shot 7 or 8 times by two semi-automatic weapons. Investigators said they are talking to several witness.

"At this point we have a general description of at least two black males driving a red Monte Carlo." Lt. Meadows said.

Police don't think the suspects knew Forrest was a professional boxer. His girlfriend's young son was in the car at the time of the shooting. Family members are flying in from Texas to pick up the child, Lt. Meadows said.

Forrest, who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team in Barcelona, Spain. He was a three-time champion with two WBC welterweight wins against Sugar Shane Mosley in 2002. Forrest, nicknamed the Viper, beat Sergio Mora for the WBC junior middleweight title in September.

The Augusta, Ga. native was stripped of his WBC belt in May because of a rib injury. He was supposed to fight Sergio Martinez on August 1st. His career record was 41-3-1 with 29 knockouts.

He was 38 years old.

RIP Vernon Forrest!!!

He was a great boxer during his prime. I love his memorable bouts with "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Story doesnt make much sense.

2 car jackers with semi automatic weapons try to steal forrest car. Somehow they didnt get it and a foot chase takes place. Forrest is shooting his gun while the others are shooting thiers? Not adding up. Not saying story is fishy, but it doesnt make any sense how it is described.

I could see if they attempted to car jack him, and upon Forrest refusal by pulling out his gun...both parties exchanged shots where Forrest was hit up 1 fatally to the head and the car jackers fled on foot to thier car.

But a foot chase?

Why would he get out of his car and chase two guys with a gun? Just be glad they didn't kill you and jack your car. You've got enough street cred, no need to go murdering mother f*ckers.

Yeah, that's true, but when someone tries to rob you, you feel violated.

He's a boxer. Ego/pride. They tried to take his ride with his son in the wheel. Thats enough to piss someone off. When you're pissed you dont always think straight/smart for that matter. Definately a bad move on his part.

You kind of wish someone of his stature, ability and reputation would be a little more leveled-headed, especially with a child in the vehicle, but like you said, It's hard to think straight in these situations.

Or they really werent prepared for Forrest to not only refuse giving up his car? But pulling out his weapon as well. So they fled. I'm not so sure the thought of a kid in the car stopped them from taking it. Didnt stop them from shooting 7-8 times, killng Forrest.

The article said he had his GF's young son in the car so I'm guessing he ran to get the jackers away from the kid. If they had a gun fight right there, kid would be dead from a stray.

From what I've read, his girlfriend's 11-year-old son was in the car or in the gas station at the time. Vernon had a gun with him and the two suspects were thwarted and he chased them off. Somehow one was able to hide and ambush Vernon as Vernon chased the other. Vernon was shot 7 or 8 times in the back

RIP to a real underrated fighter. He was a 2 weight champ & beat some real quality names, although his two convincing decisions over Mosley are what stick in the mind for most. He seemed to lack the motivation at times to beat the 'weaker' fighters like Mayorga (he won the 2nd fight) or Mora, but still he had a career that was on a similar plane IMO to the likes Kostya Tszyu. He will be sorely missed & one of the better fighters of this decade, in the way Gatti was to others.
