Default Should the Nets 'stretch' (waive?) Deron Williams?

this article makes a pretty good case of doing it before july 1st:
http://thebrooklyngame.com/brooklyn-...lliams-should/

looks like they'd save about $10mil, get under the cap, avoid the repeater tax, and be able to re-sign lopez and young.

sure they'd have to find another PG, but does it really matter at this point?

They have until the 1st and I really don't think they should. Unless someone wants to play here what's the point without a pick. And there's too much uncertainty with Lopez and Thad opting out to think that anyone would wanna come

well, the article-writer adjusted the deadlines a little. looks like they actually have until august 30th to do this.

regarding brook and thad, stretching deron before the deadline is something that could actually *help* us keep their services since the nets would have more money and cap room to play with. that's obviously the biggest reason to make this rather drastic move.

veteran / backup-level PG's are usually not too hard to find, so i think we could survive with jack and such a dude until something better comes along. not to mention, considering how quickly deron's body is crumbling, i'm not sure that would be much of a step backwards anyway.

you know, i have nothing against deron. he takes a lot of crap from people who don't know how hard he tries to work through these endless series of injuries... but at the same time i have no confidence his body will ever be the same. indeed, it's not hard to picture him being out for long stretches once again next season, and suddenly this missed deadline could come back to haunt us big time.

at the same time, it's a tricky question whether building around a slow, maxed-out offensive specialist center is really a good idea anyway. it would be a lot different if lopez could pass like the gasols, but he doesn't do that either. and he's got the long series of foot problems, too.

hard to know what to do with this team going forward...

Well Id say no, hes going to expire soon anyway and we can use him for another playoffs 1st round run. Dont laugh at me, I know a 1st round exit aint that exciting, but its still better than going to lottery without picks.

hey dude, long time.

thing is, i think deron doesn't expire for two more seasons. JJ is the one with only one more season left, who we might be able to get rid of as a valued expirer.

also... if we don't waive deron, we may not be able to keep thad / brook. in which case, we can kiss the playoffs goodbye in any case.

Yeah indeed, life has been truly busy for me. Girlfriend recently got very sick and needed hospitalization, so I asked for two weeks off from the boss so I could take care of her. In the meantime, I also have more free time now so I could spend a few hours posting here.

Well I dont really think it justifies the point of waiving either Deron or JJ. As I mentioned earlier, the Nets have no first round picks this year and next two years, we want to make it to playoffs, even a first round exit is much better than this. I was immensely delighted when the Nets made it to first round, though I knew very well this would be as far as we went.

And why we wont be able to keep Thad/Brook? I thought after ridding the contracts of PP and KG our salary conditions aint too bad any longer. I knew the owner doesnt want to spend too much money nowadays, but I think about 10m over the cap is still somewhat acceptable? Or am I missing something here, and that the front office wants to cut the team salary below the cap?

sorry to hear about your GF.

read the article if you want the answers to what you're asking.

they're not going to waive JJ since he's a potentially valuable expirer. i think you misunderstood me on that.

I agree with KiddLovesNets. If we can find any takers for D-Will we pull the trigger but for now I say we just ride it out with him. With the East being as weak as it is, we can keep sneaking into the playoffs preventing Boston from taking our lottery picks. Sadly that is the best cast scenario right now because of our situation until we find a team that will take Deron or Joe.

i have no real confidence that the nets will be able to keep sneaking in. the general tone of the nets writers seems to be that next year is going to be a tougher year for us.

i like the series ND is doing lately in which each player gets an end-of-season evaluation and grade. when it comes to players like bogs and brown there are real reasons to be hopeful, assuming they put in the offseason work.

i love that paul pierce got shown up like he did against the hawks. all that nets bashing and early celebrating... but the truth hurts, huh paul?

As am I. If we brought everyone from last season back for another run do you think we'd have a better season? Honestly, we might as well have because those picks we gave Boston turned out to be for a 1 year rental for KG and PP and half a year for Jason Terry.

Then again we wouldn't have Bojan then.

yeah if they'd somehow been able to bring everyone back (incl. livingston and blatche) and given kidd whatever he wanted, i imagine that the continuity would have led to a better season.

Shes out of hospital now, still not feeling enough good but its better than the suffering she went through for the last few weeks. Thanks, I really hope she heals fully soon...

Yeah I guess I have indeed misunderstood you a bit, I apologize. But anyway, like I said before, the Nets should not just waive Deron and tank when we do not have a pick for the next 2 years.

Even if we cannot make playoffs, we should at least still be in the hunt, and the Celtics aint getting anything better than a No.10-14 pick. Unless the Nets have bigger plans and hope to snatch 2 superstars after cleaning up salary space in 2016, but I doubt it's going to happen.
