Exclamation hip hop/rock fans please enter

Compare and contrast the two different genres in terms of 'lyrics.'

Give examples if possible.

Because some people feel that hip hop is superior lyrically than rock, and there's people that feel hip hop is a joke compared to rock.

I consider them two different approaches with both of them having their unique qualities.

It really depends what sort of rock you're talking about. Classic rock, pop rock, punk rock, pop punk, hardcore, they all have different lyrical styles.

I love both genres. Hip Hop lyrics are generally more clever.

hip hop lyrics are like little punchlines. You here them and think "oh haha, thats clever". I think rock lyrics are more deep and meaningful.

Doesn't really matter.

If you were to chose the top rock lyrics and compare/contrast them to top hip hop one's, which one's would you chose and why?

Okay.... I see that I'm not asking the proper questions.

If you were to introduce rock to a hip hop fan that never heard a rock song before in their life. And you wanted to get them into it, or impress them more or less, which one would you choose.

I completely agree with your statement about how their unique qualities.
Rap obviously focuses more on lyrics than instrumental quality.
Rock is more about instrumental than lyrical qualities.
However, there are rock bands like Linkin Park that incorporate Rap qualities. I especially like that :)

"Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes.
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis.
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion.
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?
Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter.
Glass hand dissolving to ice petal flowers
revolving.
Lady in velvet recedes in the nights of good-bye.
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?"

"Some n*ggas dream of pushing kilos but I drop tons
With more facts and formulas and philosophical logic
Then a basement full of scientists puffing on chronic
Dipped in mycin potassium cyanide and liquid bubonic
And use it as a sonic one to find the spawn of the demonic
Screaming like onyx is of absolutely no consequence"

I wasn't suggesting rap has better lyrics than rock. I was suggesting that rap has more emphasis on lyrics than instrumental. That was all.

btw, I agree the majority of rap has crappy monotonous lyrics.

No way. Rap lyrics are like a skin-deep beauty. What you see is what you get with rap. Just a bunch of clever lines. Rock lyrics can tell a story with feeling using metaphors. Although I will give credit to some old-school rappers (and even a few current ones) who had some good lyrics (2pac, BIG, rakim, common)

But I feel like rock lyrics just have so much more feeling in them.

I'll give a few examples of my favorites, although you may not like them.

Badfish

Tells the story of Bradley Nowells heroin addiction

Chelsea Smile

Tells the story of Oli Sykes' overwhelming guilt. I found myself able to relate to the song very well.

Like A Rolling Stone

Tells a story that everyone can relate to about someone's rise and fall.

I'd like to put in more Bob Dylan songs but I don't have the time. Check the lyrics to The Times They Are A-changin. They're pretty sweet.

I just feel like if rap tells a story its one like "I was in the hood then I got out"

most mainstream distributed rappers rap about stupid crap. The lyrics have minimal structure and rarely build any story or emotion, but consist of bragging and bravado. whole careers are made on that ****. modern rock really isnt much better.
