There are good and bad examples of lyrics in both genres. There are hip hop tracks with deep meaningful lyrics, but the majority is not. The same is true for rock.

IMO the lyrical element in music is overrated. In hip-hop, rock and every other genre. I only like rapping or singing if it adds some kind of aesthetic value to the song, which in a lot of cases doesn't happen.

this is too hard

set up a list of rappers and rock bands and it will be easier to determine who is better lyrically

That wont work, it has to be a 'random' list.

Go find top 10 rock songs this year and compar ethem to the top 10 hip hop songs. That will make it fair.

Somewhere along I didn't make the question clear, but I'm glad you got it.

But I feel like rock lyrics just have so much more feeling in them.

I'll give a few examples of my favorites, although you may not like them.

Badfish

Tells the story of Bradley Nowells heroin addiction

Chelsea Smile

Tells the story of Oli Sykes' overwhelming guilt. I found myself able to relate to the song very well.

Like A Rolling Stone

Tells a story that everyone can relate to about someone's rise and fall.

I'd like to put in more Bob Dylan songs but I don't have the time. Check the lyrics to The Times They Are A-changin. They're pretty sweet.

I just feel like if rap tells a story its one like "I was in the hood then I got out"

Well done.

I don't think it could've been explained any better.

There we go, do we really have to argue even with your top 10

Rock > Rap.

but to make it fair, it should be songs chosen by a 3rd party.

Agreed. And there is also some serious high quality lyrics to be found in both genres.

In the end Rock takes this, because it has been around way longer.

No, even now rock is > rap/hiphop

The biggest hip hop fan will tell you this, current music is horrible, but rock is still far superior.

Hmm. That might be the most narrow-minded comment I've heard all week. Congratulations.

This isn't really about which genre is better, and if some perceived it as such its my bad for not being clear from the beginning.

I more or less, wanna convey how they can both be great lyrically and how they compare.

I've already seen two great examples of this.

And what are those two great examples?
