Default procrastination

i've got a couple of songs i have to have ready, that are anything but, for a recording session booked this afternoon. not really sweating it though. i like the idea of having a general outline then going in and winging it, whether it be this, a work presentation, or anything.

seems like i can only finish the things i need done when the pressure's on. not only that, i perform better under a rapidly approaching deadline. i need the rush. otherwise, i just slack on the internet or somesuch.

anybody else get off on that need for pressure? or think it's a lazy thing that leads to no good?

I find I work better close to the deadline too. It reigns in my focus and raises the level of my performance. Like you already said, im more like to be on ISH or doing some other distracting activity.

I feel the same way, if I try and get something done early I get distracted because I know I have time. When it's at the now or never hour though I'm zoned in

Next time you find yourself in a book store or library look up "The Feeling Good Handbook" by David D. Burns. There's a short chapter about 200 pages in that's a very informative breakdown on several reasons why the brain procrastinates...

i figure you want me to scoff and dismiss this post because of the 200 page thing

however, any distractions to me are fair play

Simply having a general outline and believing that winging it will produce optimal results is misguided. Being relaxed and not worry about memorizing it line for line, and adding some improv when the moment comes is one thing. But believe me, whether you're rehearsing for a job interview, a speech, a dance number, whatever, you want to be thoroughly prepared or you'll regret it.

Also, I guarantee you do not work BETTER under a rapidly approaching deadline, but rather you figure that by doing it at the last moment you can squeeze all the work it takes into a shorter time frame, thus giving you more freetime up until then. It's got nothing to do with quality of work. That's an excuse. Trust me, if you were to eliminate all distractions right now, sit in a room with just 4 walls and nothing else and practice what you need to for something 2 weeks away, you would be just as effective as if you did the same thing the day before.

You can dress it up any way you like but the truth is you're making excuses and will ultimately suffer whatever consequences that entails. Maybe they'll be minor and negligible, maybe not. Guess it depends on your perspective. But please, stop fooling yourself.
