I don't see how you can blame this on American's thirst for drugs. That's a victim mentality right there...you're not forced to kill people and sell drugs for money. If you are, that's on the Mexican system for not providing other economic pathways to succeed. Or preaching better values/culture.
The corruption mentioned in this thread is mostly white collar crime - there's still way more opportunity to succeed in the US then there is Mexico. Not cartels and mafias running the local town.
I just worked with a Mexican guy for three weeks here in Australia - he had never been in a first world country before. We walk around with our work coveralls on in public and he couldn't believe it. There's a high risk of being kidnapped for wearing that stuff in public in Mexico according to him. That shit doesn't happen in the US either.
