i really don't give 9's out that often but man, this movie hit me hard. i thought it was a little pretentious at first but there's so many moving moments in this movie, especially in the last half. just a genuine soulful movie with a great cast and direction
I was a huge fan of the book and the film was absolutely fantastic. I loved the way it was structured and I love the adaptation. Reese Witherspoon gives an Oscar worthy performance. Also had a top notch soundtrack and was gorgeous to look at. My second favorite of the year behind Boyhood.
This film works on so many levels. It's an indictment on the elitism/pretension of the New York theater, celebrity obsession (on both sides of the equation), and what fame means in this day an age ('trending', twitter, etc). It's also very meta and works as well as a comedy as it does as drama. Keaton was f*cking brilliant, best lead performance by a male I've seen thus far. The rest of the cast brought was solid all around with Norton being the standout.
The direction was perfect. They made the whole run seem like one seamless, uninterrupted long take with a single steady cam. That must've been like a well-choreographed ballet to pull off.
Watched Nymphomaniac Volume 1 and 2. Volume 2 isn't anywhere near as good as the first part, and I didn't particulary care for the ending either. Gets a bit graphic when she gives herself an abortion with a set of knitting needles and a coat hanger though. Decent enough movies overall though.
Good movie overall but I have a couple beefs with it.
First of it was much to long and drawn out for my liking. It's very close to 3 hours long and some of the scenes just seem to go on and on forever. They could have chopped much of it down without the viewer losing anything at all IMO.
Second beef is more of an annoyance but there is so much scientifically wrong in the movie that it is hard to look past. Along with so much that just isn't humanly possible. It's movie... Is a movie.
