Nah man, it's just that I spent time and money looking for the best quality diamond and in the end no one will notice it unless they staring at the thing with a microscope.
If I did it again, I would spend much less.
Also a heads up, if you find a ring style that you really like you can bring it to a jeweler and they can make you a custom replica. Don't spend $$$ on name brands.

Bunch of idiots in this thread. Do some detective work. Look at her search history and see what rings she's been looking at. If those prices are too high, tell her. There's better things to spend money on than damn rings. There are women out there who don't care about rings either. I know a chick that got a guitar as an engagement "ring"

I was a goldsmith for close to 10 years......it's absurd the amount of money people will spend on an engagement ring.
Also keep in mind what you are buying is marked up about 300%.
the material value of jewellery would boggle your brain.

Get her something she'll like. Do you know her at all aside from that she's rich? I spent two weeks worth of my pay on my now wife's ring. It made her happy and that's all there is to it.

Re: is there any unwritten rules for buying engagement rings?
Just make sure it's a legit diamond. My wife and the girls were one time matching rigns at a bowling alley that had black lighting. Diamonds will glow a bluish color under this lighting. This one girl's ring did not glow. Needless to say my buddy was in the doghouse.
I spent $400 on mine. I don't think there is a rule of thumb, only if the girl has her eye on one. Girls just want a ring on the finger is all.

just pay for her to get a ring tattoo on her finger and say, "baby, rings will come and go. but this will last forever" in your best barry white impression.
its all about the presentation.

Re: is there any unwritten rules for buying engagement rings?
We didn't have cash back then so we spent like $1,000. We didn't want to spend too much because it seemed excessive to create debt for a ring, plus as well she'd be afraid to wear it and get robbed. We spent a bit more recently to replace it, she lost it. She was heartbroken, and there's not much you can say - i have no magic powers to find it. We are looking for the same ring but we bought it in Japan so will get it next year. Till then we bought something as a placeholder (she wears the engagement ring next to the wedding ring).
As for OP, a general rule would be not to buy it to shut the girl up. JUst a thought.
