Sure, Conley went off for 23 and 28 points, respectively, in the two bouts, and Gasol gave Utah’s bigs much more than they could handle throughout each contest, but guys like Jaren Jackson and, perhaps most surprising to Jazz fans, former teammate Shelvin Mack have done critical damage as well.

Not surprised by Mack. There's a reason he played ahead of Exum rather the fans liked it or not. He's better than Rubio as well

Quote:
The fact that Conley and Mack have had such great success against the Jazz is a testament to the fact that Ricky Rubio needs to step it up on both ends of the court, but particularly defensively. Receiving meaningful minutes from Dante Exum would be big, too. Unfortunately, he’s a combined 3-of-17 from the field and 0-of-6 from deep in the two games against the Grizzlies with a total plus-minus of minus-16. Ouch.

Hard to say Ricky needs to step up on D more considering how horrible his O is.

Eric Woodyard: Mike Conley on facing Jazz for 3rd time: “It’s a mini-playoff series almost. I know they’re probably tired of seeing us, we’re tired of seeing them. So, we hopefully can get them out of the way early in the year and we don’t have to play them again because they’re really good.” – via Twitter E_Woodyard

Entering Monday night’s game against the Jazz in Memphis, the Grizzlies are 5-0 at FedExForum, making them the last team in the Western Conference undefeated at home “There’s something about it, man,” Temple said. “I just feel like we’re going to win the games.” – via Memphis Commercial Appeal

The 5-0 home start is the second-best in franchise history, trailing only the 2014-15 team’s 8-0 home start. Memphis started 13-2 overall that year. Crowds of 17,000 or more packed FedExForum for six of the eight games that were part of the prolific beginning to a 55-27 season. Just one crowd of 17,000 saw one of the team’s first five home games this year, and that was for the home-opener against Atlanta when Chandler Parsons purchased 1,000 tickets to give away for free. – via Memphis Commercial Appeal

So actually, they moved on from their All-Star forward by not asking anybody to replace him at all. They’re asking Mitchell to be Mitchell, Ingles to be Ingles and Crowder to be Crowder, and they’re trusting in that collective effect.

and Ricky to be Ricky, and Favors to be Favors and Exum to be Exum.

Quote:
Utah is still taking the second most corner threes (as a % of FGA) in the league… and they’re still canning just 28.7 percent of them, good for third worst in the Association per CTG. If those shots begin to drop at even an average clip, Utah’s offense, already top-10, could look very different. Crowder and Ricky Rubio are each hitting 27 percent, Dante Exum is at 20 percent, and Donovan Mitchell has made just one of his nine corner three attempts. Yikes. The Jazz missed all nine corner three attempts against Toronto.

The problem is you're asking Exum and Rubio and Favors to be average

Quote:
And when it doesn’t lead to an easy look for the guy coming out of the corner or a dunk for the rolling big, there’s always the first screener, who oftentimes has been left alone as the three defenders worry about the action heading into the paint. Look at how alone Crowder is by the time Ingles sends this pass to Gobert; another option is the kick-out there1. Whatever the defense doesn’t cover, the Jazz will take and exploit it.

Have to have shot makers to exploit it though

And let’s be honest. Derrick Favors was our best player in 2014 not Hayward. I personally am glad that Hayward is not on the team anymore. I love that the team is now Rudy’s and Donovan’s. I don’t miss Hayward at all but the narratives that have followed since he left have been lazy and inaccurate.

They sucked in 13-14 but in 14-15 Gobert made them relevant again not Favors or Hayward or Snyder or Lindsey or Exum or anyone else you want to try to give the credit to.

Ingles is not the team’s best perimeter defender, nor its best rebounder and not its best passer. He doesn’t use a ton of possessions (his 18.8 percent usage rate this season is a career-high) and he doesn’t even really have the ball in his hands all that often — among the 292 players who have played at least 100 minutes this season, Ingles ranks 105th in time of possession percentage, meaning the ball is in his hands about as often as it’s in those of, say, Andre Iguodala.

Arguably their best passer

I'd say he's one of the top 4 players on the team for the 3rd straight year. 1-Gobert, 2-Crowder and then Mitchell and Ingles not necessarily in that order this year

Two days later, the Jazz traded for Ricky Rubio, but he wasn’t the only point guard the Jazz were considering. Besides the incumbent starter, George Hill, according to multiple Tribune sources, the Jazz spoke extensively to Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry’s representatives about bringing the All-Star point guard to Utah. After those discussions, the Jazz felt confident about their ability to land Lowry, but chose to pull out of any potential deal because signing Lowry would have required cap space earmarked for the Hayward. Lowry signed a new deal with the Raptors on July 3. – via Salt Lake Tribune

Could go over cap to sig Hayward. No wonder he left their cheap asses.

Just missed a triple double last time he played there. Hopefully Allen will take his place once Neto is back on the roster

Oddly enough, the offensive breakout resulted from Utah’s starting point guard, Ricky Rubio (who was three of 11 on the night) picking up a quick two fouls in the third quarter. That gave him four in the game and sent him to the pine.

Yeah that is odd that their offense would play better without a liability on the floor.

Quote:
After Rubio fouled out, Snyder resorted to the fascinating line up of Mitchell, Burks, Ingles, Crowder, and Gobert. That’s a combination that should see more play this season, especially against quality defensive teams like the Grizzlies. Not only are Mitchell and Burks Utah’s best shot creators, but Mitchell and Ingles both run the pick and roll well and every one of these players but Gobert can hit the kickout three at a solid rate. When Utah’s offense struggles, look for this lineup to make an appearance in the future.

Don't expect Burks to keep playing

Quote:
Favors is now shooting 38-percent from three this season! There’s no way that’s sustainable, but it looks like the low 30s just might be. If he managed that, his value is utterly transformed in the current NBA climate.

Still don't think he can shoot in the 30's

Word is the Wolves did try to engage Washington — another team falling well short of expectations — in trade talks for the sharpshooting guard Bradley Beal. But the Wizards have kept Beal off limits amid their 4-9 start. They would naturally prefer to trade the struggling Otto Porter, or perhaps even John Wall, but both possess hard-to-move contracts. My pal Zach Lowe at ESPN recently did a deep dive on just how hard Wall will be to trade once his “supermax” contract extension kicks in next season. – via New York Times

Rubio, Exum, Favors for Porter and Wall somewhere else? 3rd team?
