Default James O'Keefe to pay ACORN employee $100,000

Remember those ACORN "sting" videos from a couple years ago? The ones where the journalist provacateur James O'Keefe took at various ACORN offices then deceptively edited including adding a clip of him filmed later that showed him entered the office dressed like a 70's pimp? Well, one of them just cost him $100,000

Quote:
James O'Keefe, the conservative activist whose hidden-camera stings have been aimed at liberal targets, has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a former employee of the group ACORN, according to documents filed Thursday in federal court here.

As part of the settlement, O'Keefe says he "regrets any pain" suffered by Juan Carlos Vera, who was interviewed by O'Keefe and an associate in ACORN's office in National City, near the U.S.-Mexico border, on Aug. 18, 2009.

The video, aired repeatedly on television, appears to show that Vera was willing to help O'Keefe smuggle underage girls into the U.S. to act as prostitutes. O'Keefe and his associate, Hannah Giles, had gone to the ACORN office without an invitation.

In the settlement, O'Keefe says that before the video was shown on TV or posted on the Web, he was unaware of Vera's assertion that he had called the police to report O'Keefe and Giles for proposing an illegal act.

Vera's lawsuit was filed by Eugene Iredale, one of San Diego's top criminal defense and civil rights attorneys. The lawsuit was filed on the assertion that O'Keefe broke a state law prohibiting the surreptitious recording of someone's voice and image.

Had he followed common journalistic ethical practices and called the person beforehand for a comment, he would have saved himself some money.

Yes, but that where direct mail solicitations to pay James O'Keefe's legal bills come. Convince $50,000 people to donate $5 and you just made yourself $150,000.

All these guys understand how make money off of mailing lists. Get yourself a good mailing list and you can resell it to others.

How about convincing $162 people to donate $2660 and then you end up with $430920?

Big story up on the Boston Phoenix about a woman who worked as one of O'Keefe's operatives. Written by some guy who wrote a book on the Occupy Movement and has a book called I Killed Andrew Breitbart coming out later this year. It's described as a sequel.

Quote:
And then, in a single night nearly two years after they first met, Naffe’s life became a nightmare. She says O’Keefe took her to a barn and drugged her, then turned on her — setting off a campaign of intense harassment. For bloggers like Breitbart and his followers, hounding Naffe became a crusade. “RUIN HER,” wrote one commenter on a right-wing blog, in just a small example of the flames fanned at Naffe over the past year and a half. “Burn her f*cking world to the ground, and salt the earth as you leave. Make the wasteland a memorial to all who would consider pulling that kind of bullsh*t.” Indeed, Breitbart hounded Naffe to the end of his life. On the day of his death, one year ago this week, his final tweet was a snide jab aimed directly at her.

She is one of two women who stopped working with O'Keefe after accusing him of sketchy shit. O'Keefe used her phone to access his gmail.....which gave her access to all his emails....which after a court injunction a judge said could be released.

Also some stuff on crazy internet feuds that end up with SWAT teams and court dates.

There's several hints in the article about how much access to funds O'Keefe has. He has a 503c organization which lets you get tax-deductible contributions.
Quote:
With contributions pouring in, O’Keefe had invested thousands on computers and surveillance equipment.
