It makes sense. There isn't anything to gain from a buyout other than a roster spot. You save a small bit of money, but only around 20% of the given contract tops, if even that. Potential savings don't effect cap position at all, just the Simons' pockets, even with a b/o the contract is still on the books as if a b/o never happened. Why pay a guy to play somewhere else, and also be paid by them?
We'll see if the Bird vision of team building is successful, but whether it is or not no one can deny that he, along with O'Brien, make every player earn their playing time. Maybe not money, but that's thanks to guaranteed contracts (which is a whole other issue). At first thought you would think a guy like Jamaal'd be more than happy to sit on his ass and make near $8 million for the next three years. But somewhere deep down, he wants to play basketball. You don't put in the work it takes to make the L w/o having a deep rooted passion for the game. Until he gets his **** together, dedicates himself in all aspects, I don't even see him being allowed to be around the team. Best case, we see a portion of the Tinsley we thought he'd be after his rookie year and have a great distributor up for trade. Worst case, he's a dead contract, it happens...especially when Donnie Walsh makes the offers.
But, a trade for any equal or lesser length contract is ideal.
