Talking Spurs vs Wizards Preview

Quote:
San Antonio Spurs (36-17) at Washington Wizards (13-42), 8:00 p.m.

The Southwest Division-leading San Antonio Spurs will wrap up a lengthy eight-game road trip tonight against the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center.

The Spurs are 4-3 on the trek and ended a two-game slide with an 83-79 victory at Detroit on Thursday.

Tony Parker had 19 points and 11 assists for San Antonio, which improved to 18-10 away from the Alamo City this season. Tim Duncan chipped in 18 points and 18 rebounds, as the Spurs escaped The Palace with a victory despite Allen Iverson's 31 points.

Matt Bonner added 15 points and seven rebounds in a winning effort. After Saturday's game the Spurs will return home for a three-game residency. They will certainly miss the services of guard Manu Ginobili, who is out the next two to three weeks with an ankle injury.

Washington is aiming for a season-high three straight wins Saturday, when it kicks off a three-game homestand versus San Antonio, Philadelphia and Chicago. It has won two in a row just twice this season and is coming off Friday's 107-96 victory at New Jersey, as Antawn Jamison finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way. Jamison is averaging 26.7 points and 10.6 rebounds in the past three contests.

WASHINGTON -- Roger Mason had 25 points and five assists against his old team as the San Antonio Spurs wrapped up their 19-day road trip with a 98-67 win over the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

Mason returned to his hometown and went 9-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range, and had 10 points and two steals in a 19-4 run that capped the third quarter and gave the Spurs a 78-57 lead.

He was done for the night after that, taking a place on the bench as San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich rested his starters in the blowout.

Michael Finley added 19 points, and Tim Duncan had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who made eight of their first 11 shots to take a 19-9 lead and were never seriously threatened by the worst team in the Eastern Conference. They finished 5-3 on a stretch that has seen them play nothing but road games so far in February, capping 10,761 miles of travel over 19 days while their home court was occupied by the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

The Spurs also improved to 2-1 since Manu Ginobili was sidelined with a stress fracture in his right ankle. Ginobili is expected to miss 2-3 weeks, but Mason was an especially suitable replacement against the Wizards.

Born in the nation's capital, Mason played the last two seasons with the Wizards and is now sorely missed. Washington team president Ernie Grunfeld decided he couldn't afford to keep Mason, so the guard signed a two-year, $7.3 million contract with the Spurs as a free agent last summer and is having the best season of his career.
