You know the Muscle Shoals connection with the Drive by Truckers, right?

I like this new song from ex DbTer, Jason Isbell.

Just because somebody's evening didn't go so well."

Also if I remember, you're a George Jones fan. In his autobiography he tells an insane story of his days in Muscle Shoals. Apparently his manager thought that since George was such a raging alcoholic, it would be a profitable enterprise to get him hooked on cocaine. Click the link for stories of kidnapping, drugdealing cops and a beheading.

Great tune. It's between "TVA" and "Dress Blues" as my favorite Isbell songs.

    Movie is on Netflix now.

Some great moments. The Aretha Franklin we all know didn't exist before she recorded in Muscle Shoals. Producers didn't know what to do with her, in the clip they showed, she sounds like Nat King Cole. Respect might be the best soul song ever and it's played by entirely white band from Alabama.

Duane Allman convinced Wilson Pickett to play Hey Jude. One the musicians says that Allman's solos on that song were the beginning of Southern Rock.

This was among my favorite movies last year.

There's a small art house theatre in New Haven CT, about a half hour from me, and right off the Yale campus. I love going there. The bars and resturants are great, and it's just a nice area to walk in. I always check the theatre up there because they carry different stuff. A lot of times it's just weird indie stuff that has a buzz to it, not necessarily artsy stuff. For example that's where I saw Hobo with a Shotgun.

Anyway, I always check their listings every weekend. They were showing Muscle Shoals last fall. I'm often willing to take a chance on a few decent reviews just for the excuse to mill around up there. But in this case once I read the summary it was a no brainer.

They have a few big, full size theatres, that do all the bells and whistles, 3D and full sound. But they also have these smaller theatres up front, seat maybe 50, smaller screen, and the films are projected from a blu ray. That's how I saw Muscle Shoals. It was more crowded than those flicks usually are. Probably about 20 people in there. It's often half that. But people were rocking out in the theatre. It was a really cool experience.

I admit to not knowing much of anything about it prior to seeing the movie. The film synopsis I read was just a quote from Skynard's Sweet Home Alabama ...
"Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
    Now how about you?"

At that point I didn't need to read anything else.
