I did not think Lebron would become as good as he is.

Always thought he would become a better player. Had big hopes for this guy to dethrone MJ. But alas he wasnt good enough, he is great nevertheless

One of those "once-in-a-generation" players.

We are fortunate to be able to watch one of the greatest ever, and at his peak. By the time he hangs it up, he may very well have a case, as THE greatest ever.

It was tough for me to decipher at the time as well. He was one of the first super youngsters ESPN ever devoted nightly highlights toward. One part of me saw him dunking between-the-legs during games, scoring 50, and getting an incredible amount of hype. Another part of me knew he was doing it against regular high school kids, so I wondered how it'd translate in the NBA.

....

It translated.

To dethrone MJ, a player will have to be a level above him and it can't even be arguable, because then the nostalgists will just give it to MJ.

So this player will have to shatter boundaries in the sport and literally look unhuman, almost like Usain Bolt.

I somewhat thought Lebron could do it, but i wasn't expecting that.

All you can reasonably expect out of someone is to be one the best players of their generation, and even that is hard to be sure of when they are in high school or college (and we've seen the experts fail at predicting that many times recently...examples: Greg Oden, Michael Beasley, John Wall, Evan Turner, etc...actually, it seems like they are wrong about that more times than they are right these days)

He's done his job.

Just the myth of Lebron James has kept people from realizing how once in a generational talent Durant is.

The lack of hype Durant gets is unbelievable. In the last 20 years there has not necessarily been a clear cut better perimeter player (and this coming from a HUGE Kobe fan).

Don't get me wrong...i'd still take a 2001 Kobe over current Durant. Kobe has that killer in him that I think is immeasurable. He gives his teammates confidence, even if he himself sucks and misses a lot occasionally. Inspiring teammates is a big part of leadership.

Durant just does everything himself, but I'm not sure if he has the personality style to be that leader. Especially, with a natural born killer like Westbrook on his team.

Lebron is the best basketball athlete ever. I don't think is arguable. It is arguable if he is the best athlete to play basketball, but not who is the best basketball athlete (if that makes sense).

There have been players stronger, faster, quicker, can jump higher...but no one has the pure combination of all of these abilities like Lebron has. The closest would be a young Shaq. However, he never had the body control and perimeter player coordination (e.g., dribbling at 100% of a full speed sprint going around defenders).

it didnt just translate... he exceeded the translation. to say someone like him just merely translated to the NBA is insulting to his accomplishments.

He's definitely had a lot of speech training. He's decently eloquent now, but he sounded like a retard back then.

A shame he isn't more of a competitor. Could've been the greatest athlete to ever live.

Kid came out of the womb with more talent/athleticism than anyone since Jim Thorpe but just quite didn't have that competitive nack that guys like MJ, Westbrook, Durant, and Bubba Watson have.

We can still appreciate the athletic genetics his father gave him though.
