Re: If Pistons meet the Heat in ECF again...
I would single cover Shaq MOST of the time. When you consistantly double Shaq you open it up for Three-Point shooters, and give them wide open looks.
As for who would cover him, it would be a collection of all the bigs. Chris Webber to start the game, Rasheed at times, Dale Davis, Nazr Mohammed, even Dyess sometimes. Mix it up, use the bench guys fouls, and just try to force him to take shots from further out. Try to attack him on the offensive end too, make him work, and maybe get him into foul trouble.
As for Dwyane Wade I would put Rip on him to start the game, Tayshaun in the fourth quarter. And Lindsey for his normal Playoff minutes, plus Delfino. Mix it up. But I would be trying to bracket him, and have guys swarming, and trapping him when he puts the ball down to go to the basket. Kind of a 3 man against Wade trap.
It's better to double team Wade, than Shaq. Wade is a much better passer than Shaq (Shaq is good for big man/center), but it's much easier to get back to your man from a double team on Wade, and contest a three pointer, than it is to double Shaq and get back to contest three's. And preventing Wade from getting into the lane (as much as possible) is a huge deterent to Shaq, and the other players as well. Because he won't be able to get Shaq, and Haslem those easy dump off's for dunks and layups. And the less he is in the lane, the less free throw attempts he will get.
I have always thought it was a mistake to double team Shaq, because it opens up the floor for three's, and he's always had good to great three point shooters around him. And he's a good passer out of double teams in the post.
We didn't double Shaq in the 2004 NBA Finals, and that's a huge reason why we won in my opinion. We bracketed Kobe, and forced him into tough, forced shots, and single covered Shaq all game long. Which basically removed all the role players for the Lakers, and made them a 2 man team. Which clearly wasn't enough to beat a team full of good to great players all working great together on offense, and defense.
But of course we had Ben, and were much better defensively then, so it won't be as easy this year, but that's how I would cover Shaq, and DWade.
