The video really doesn't explain it that well, but I will say that it was one ugly brawl. I was at the game. I'll give my summary:
The date is July 17, 2003. There had been bad blood between these two teams for a few weeks. It involved a pair of home plate collisions in Brooklyn about 2 weeks earlier. Then came the beaning the following game. The fact that there was a fight was not surprising at all.
Fast forward to the 17th, current Yankees pitcher Matt DeSalvo was the starting pitcher. In the top of the 6th inning, the Cyclones lead 2-0. Andy Wilson comes to the plate. On a 2-0 count, DeSalvo drills Wilson in the head. An irate Wilson slams his helmet and goes after DeSalvo.
Catcher Carlos Rosario attempts to hold back Wilson, and Wilson punches him in the face. This is the beginning. Both dugouts empty onto the field and just about everyone is fighting. The umpires have no chance of controlling this and it did not let up at all.
One fight that stood out was by the Yankees dugout. Bullpen pitchers Brad Blackwell and Robert Paulk get into an ugly fist fight which results in Blackwell being sent to Staten Island University Hospital for 8 stitches.
The fighting did not stop until cops from the 120th precient(down the block from the stadium) came to break it up. The entire brawl lasted half an hour. The cops made it clear that if another fight broke out, players would be leaving in handcuffs. Wilson, still irate, rips his teammates, telling them to get back out and fight some more.
The next batter was being taunted by fans, so he swings his bat, hoping to get it above the screen behind home plate with hopes of hitting someone. There were no other incidents and the Cyclones won 5-2.
