He didn't dominate the ball like one would expect. Automatically one assumes that he'd have the ball every second, every possession, that he'd just dribble, dribble, dribble and create, but that's not remotely close to the truth.
His teammates missed a number of wide open easy shots. These aren't 3pt shots, these are shots in the paint that are usually automatic for them.
He was getting double teamed almost every possession, but only a few of the assists came off those double teams.
And finally but more importantly was his DEFENSE. He was all over the place, didn't take a play off defensively. The ball moves far more than today, so it's also harder on your stamina. He doesn't just stay camping out in one spot, he's putting pressure on the ball, double teaming, switching, fighting through screens far more than players do today. Did anybody keep a tally on the amount of blocks, strips and steals he had?
And this is basically how he played for the most part. I didn't get the feeling at any point that he passed on scoring opportunities to get assists (at least not blatantly).
