We'll leave this thread in this forum for now so it can pick up some steam and gets a bunch of posts in it, and then move it into the international forum some other time. Thanks all.

Shame they didn't give a wild card to Finland. Heard 3k+ were going to travel to Spain to cheer, guess not

e: how do you know the teams already? "FIBA's Central Board will convene for the first time in 2014 this coming weekend, 1-2 February, in Barcelona, Spain and one of its main orders of business will be to decide who will be granted the four wild cards to complete the 24-team line-up at this summer's FIBA Basketball World Cup."

Did i miss a thing on the wildcards ?

2 days ago they had news they will sell them to the teams that pay the most money!

whoever plays at this event should be ashamed to be a puppet for this organisation!

My contacts in Arkansas have sent me inside informations. Looks like Euroleague will travel with his trailer home all the way to Europe and make Spanoulis an offer he can't refuse...

Because the Olympics isn't a real world championship. It's a 3rd tier international tournament (behind EuroBasket and World Cup).

It only has a few of the top teams, and then a bunch of scrub teams. It only has 12 teams total, and most of the world's best teams don't play at it.

It's never at any time ever been considered a world championship. In truth, even most NBA players don't even consider it a world championship if you ask them about it.

It is what it is, the Olympics. So just like in other sports, they have the Olympics, and then they have the actual world championship for the sport.

The Olympics is more for the political, cultural, and social aspects and the sheer spectacle of the event, and the world championships in each sport are for the actual sportive purposes. This is not that hard to comprehend.

On Saturday 1 February, the Central Board will make its decision and announce the four national teams that will receive the wild cards and complete the line-up for its flagship event, which will take place in Spain from 30 August to 14 September 2014.

Following the board's decision, the Official Draw of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup will take place on Monday 3 February. The 24 teams will be drawn in four Preliminary Round groups of six teams each. Those games will be played in the cities of Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Granada and Seville. The Final Round will then be staged in Barcelona and Madrid.

Fifteen national teams from across four FIBA zones met the 30 October 2013 deadline to submit their applications for the wild cards to complete the line-up for Spain 2014.

But they are also saying that Senegal might also get replaced with a wildcard also.

This is a tournament where we sent our USA players from Europe

And still came out 3rd.

Most of the elite NBA players hardly care about this

Only minor league players from Euroleague

Gets excited about this.

This is their only chance to win.

The world's best team never plays in EuroBasket.
