Default Suns escape with 1pt win over Toronto

Quote:
The Suns were more sloppy than slick. They missed more shots than they made. And in the end, they had to count on one of the game's clutch shooters to miss two shots in the final seconds.

But as it always goes with Steve Nash and the Suns against Toronto, they prevailed again.

Phoenix's 11th consecutive victory over the Raptors came with some new features, such as pulling out tight games and second-half defense. With Toronto shooting 41.3 percent in the second half, the Suns won 101-100 on Sunday night at US Airways Center when Nash foiled the Raptors with a go-ahead, driving 3-point play with 38.9 seconds to go.

Nash's drive to the left against Jose Calderon gave Phoenix its 14th consecutive home win and an NBA-best 9-2 record. It also was the Suns' third win by four points or fewer and their fourth victory after rallying from a double-digit deficit.

"We had to grind it out," said Nash, who had 23 points and nine assists. "We struggled a little bit offensively, so we had to find a different way to win."

Toronto's Hedo Turkoglu missed a 3-pointer against Amaré Stoudemire, but a Nash missed 3-pointer gave Turkoglu one last shot. Suns coach Alvin Gentry reinserted Grant Hill to guard Turkoglu, but center Channing Frye wound up being switched over to him. Turkoglu lost his dribble, a possible double-dribble, before just missing a 20-footer at the buzzer.

On a night that none of his teammates had the long shooting range, Frye became the first NBA player to make six 3-pointers in a game for the third time this season. All three games have come at home, where he is 21 of 32 on 3-pointers. He is 11 of 36 on 3-pointers on the road.

"It feels good to be home," Frye said. "I hadn't made junk on the road. I was calm out there. Last year, I would've never sent he court at the end of the game. This year, I made a game-winning stop."

The Suns shot just 44.9 percent, but Stoudemire bounced back from a 2-for-15 shooting performance Thursday at the Los Angeles Lakers, making 10 of 15 shots and scoring 30 points.

"It was a matter of the fatigue not being a factor," Stoudemire said.

Stoudemire also had eight rebounds, but Jason Richardson led the Suns on the boards for a third time this season with 10 rebounds.

Defense appeared to be optional early in the game. Both teams thrive on the same system of outscoring, outshooting and outrunning teams.

"Even in practice, we have trouble defending it," Gentry said.

The Raptors took a 44-34 lead with 8:39 to go in the first half but scored just nine points the rest of the half.

Goran Dragic and Earl Clark played in the first half but not after that. Leandro Barbosa took over the backup point-guard duties in the second half. The Suns took a lead for the first time since the middle of the first quarter when Nash hit a 3-pointer for an 87-84 lead with 7:41 to go.

Report

Key player

Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire shook off Thursday's 2-for-15 performance and scored a season-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting.

Key moment

After a 15-7 Toronto run gave the Raptors a 100-98 lead, the Suns took the lead back on Steve Nash's driving 3-point play.

Key number

4: Times this season that the Suns have rallied from a double-digit deficit (vs. Clippers, Heat, 76ers and Raptors).

View from press row

Only one Suns player was on the floor for all of the last 18 minutes of the game. The Suns just can't do without Jared Dudley, who entered the game with the Suns trailing by seven points. Dudley had been a hot shooter of late, but his stat line was uninspiring Sunday. His play still was inspiring, though, with big plays such as when he drew Andrea Bargnani's fifth foul. When the Suns switch defensively often, he is the perfect small forward to move to guards or big men.
