Video edit software

I need to make a simple commercial, so I need program that can edit a videofile to add sound effects, music, a text effect etc, that kind of thing.

Is there any simple, free program out there that I can use for this? If there is no good freeware, which program should I "purchase" then?

I've used Cyberlink's Powerdirector, and I know firsthand that working torrents exist for it. It is pretty powerful, although all I did with it before was make a simple slideshow w/ music in the background. I think you can do most anything with it. I just looked and it's actually rated #1 for 2011 on toptenreviews.com

Your computer should have windows movie maker already on it, although I haven't used it much so I don't know if it'll do everything you want it to.

Yeah I know but I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. Anyway, I bought that powerdirector program and it's going to do what I want, so FCN gets the nuts.
