Default Did Joe Johnson make the right decision in leaving Phoenix for Atlanta?

When you look at it, it's an interesting question.

His last season with Phoenix, they had a huge year and- up until he got hurt in the playoffs- Johnson was playing capable basketball.

He obviously hasn't lost his touch with the Hawks, but do you think he has any regrets over that?

Did he make the right move? Maybe he could have signed somewhere else?

Given some of the close playoff heartbreaks Phoenix had in the ensuing years, how much of a difference might he have made?

I don't know what goes through his mind when (or if) he thinks about his time with the Suns, but I think with Joe Johnson on the roster, the Suns could've potentially made the Finals in all those seasons where they were eliminated from the Playoffs.
We all know Johnson is a terrific scorer, and though he's not the best defender, he does play defense well enough to get the job done.
With that said, a guy like Johnson playing the way he does now with the Hawks definitely would've allowed the Suns to strategically advance through every round of the Playoffs, no matter the competition.

Just imagine:

C - Channing Frye (at the time in the mid-2000s)
PF - Amare Stoudemire
SF - Shawn Marion
SG - Joe Johnson
PG - Steve Nash

Other than the Center position, the rest of the starting line-up would've been occupied by All-Stars who were also arguably top 5 in their respective positions in the league.

he got 2 max contracts out of it while PHX hasn't signed anymore for more than 30 mil over the life of their contract in that same time frame.

so yea, he made the right move

when you're making around 23~ mill/year for a few years towards the end of a huge contract, i'm sure he made the right one. i don't think he'd be making anywhere near that if he stayed. Atlanta Spirit Group are worse than Dolan....

Personally yes he made the right decision, professionally it's tough. He could have been the missing piece on those Phoenix Suns teams.

Joe Johnson doesn't put himself in a position to land $20 million a year on any other team. He'd have been a contributor to a potential title winner, but less paid...and Joe Johnson doesn't really care much about titles, I think.

So yeah, for him...he did the right thing.

With the Suns he probably would have had more team success, but doing what he did has obviously resulted in him earning 10s of millions of dollars more.

Fans tend to overestimate how much athletes do and should value team success. It's a profession, you get yourself paid. If some company is willing to pay you a lot more salary to do the same job that's where you should go.
Nothing wrong with that, JJ made a "no-brainer" choosing to leave Phoenix.

$119 million says yup.

All Stars appearances, and being the face of a franchise say yes too.

Slightly straying off-topic, do you guys remember when he broke his face after a dunk attempt? I remember his Suns days as him being a role player. His statistics for that club are much healthier than I thought they'd be. I also came across footage from his Celtics days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5F75fvHshM

Joe didn't want to be the fourth option behind Stoudemire, Nash and Marion.

He will get 190 million from the Hawks over his 2 contracts.

The Hawks are now clearly the better team, and ownership for the Hawks is better than what the Suns have.

He made the right decision for himself - absolutely.

Point on .. but the reason why he left was that Amare and Nash were the men and Johnson wanted to be 'thee man' and wasn't looking at playoff or ring chasing.

Real sad , because he will be rich , his kids will say my dad played pro ball , but no one else will remember him when he retires.
No way does he mak HOF.

I actually think he would of been a better player playing in PHX.
Reason : he could of concentrated on his defense , post play and team play , while other players could carry the load.

He simply left to go to Atlanta to make serious money.
*During his free agency : he possibly could of hooked up with another team with a legit all-star or two , take less money and probably go deep into the playoffs.
Instead - he was the first to sign a contract , land the beef , retain the 'man' status and will never get past the 2nd round.

peerly speculation : you could also say then , Suns might of threw a bunch of cash at the same players , because they were in the Western conference finals 2-3 years , and strictly targeting the title in the same time frame with all the players not opt'n out or gettin free agency rides.

Of course he did, he got to be the face of a very solid team and made over 100 million dollars doing it. He was never going to be an MVP/HoF type player anyway regardless of where he played.

He doesn't care a whole lot about winning anyway. Hell he wanted to leave the season he was to become a FA, and so did the fans, but he came back sure enough when we offered him max money.

You're right that he won't be remembered once he's gone, and frankly, he shouldn't be.

Also Jasper do you think that teams have unlimited money or something?
