Default Nuggets extend qualifying offer to JR Smith

The Denver Nuggets have made a qualifying offer to restricted free agent J.R. Smith, Nuggets Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien announced today. Per team policy, terms of the offer were not released.

In an expected move, the Nuggets tendered the qualifying offer Friday to guard J.R. Smith. That means Smith will become a restricted free agent Tuesday, and the Nuggets this summer will have the right to match any offer.

However, the Nuggets are still waiting to decide whether to tender the qualifying offer to guard Yakhouba Diawara by Monday’s deadline. If they do, he will be a restricted free agent. If they don’t, he will become unrestricted.

Smith’s qualifying offer is for $3.04 million. That gives Smith, who made $2.14 million last season, the right to accept that salary for next season, and become an unrestricted free agent July 1, 2009.

However, the Nuggets can sign Smith to a contract this summer or he could sign an offer sheet with another team. If Smith signs an offer sheet, the Nuggets would have seven days to match.

Finally, some J.R. news.
Here's to hoping that J.R. decides to remain with the Nuggets(for the rest of his career along with AI + Melo).

so best case scenerio

1- someone signs him to a full mle contract - ? 5.5 ish- for 5 years- then the nuggets match & have him locked up at a great price

2- nugs sign jr to somewhere around a 5 year 50 million dollar contract

3-jr signs the 3 million dollar 1 year with the nugs and hopes for more cash next year

worst case

teams with cap space offer over 10 mill- would cost nugs &ver 20 mill in luxery tax- scares me wondering if they will pay 20+ mill for a guy who your coach doesnt want and WILL NOT PLAY??

All I know is that for the Nuggets to be a future contender they need to re-sign J.R., that should be their #1 priority. #2 priority of course is to get a new coach, which I think we will do as soon as his contract allows.

you are joking yourself

for jr?? devin harris, and if it were me id also make the nets take either iverson or kmarts contract for guys like krstic & nachbar

why do people always think players they want shipped out are worth other teams best players? that is like expecting hinrich for kenyon martin. you have to trade players you want when trading for someone else's players that they want- i understand that to trade for a hinrich that the nugs would atleast have to give up a camby, & maybe kleiza too

if the nets were actually serious about luring a free agent in '10 than they should be very interested in camby, kmart, &/or iversons contract
