You can bypass the two week wait for a handgun at a show
Probably a much larger selection at a show as well.

All those "chances" are heavily skewed by low income morons. Take away the white trash and ghetto folk who clean their guns while drinking cheap beer and you have much different "chances" for things going wrong.
If you're a responsible adult with no history of depression you can ignore all that.

Much higher than not having a gun in your house.
What is the chance that someone breaks in, you actually have a chance to stare them down with the gun with your family members all behind you so you know you can use it? (You can't use it if people are wandering the house). You also need to have time to load it and be ready.
I see value but I think this thought that you'll have a gun as a deterrent is overrated because there's so many situations it's not going to help. It's probably more so when you live in the middle of nowhere and can hear someone driving up, coming up. In NY, chances are when you hear the person they are on you.

I thought that was nation wide, Brady Law... They have two weeks to do a background check on handgun buyers.

they did run a background check, but that only took them 5-10 minutes on the computer.

If you know what you want, gun shows have the best prices but you can rarely test them out. Many gun stores, also have ranges where you can get a feel of the weapon before you buy it. The latter is the best option if you are clueless as to your needs.

And the vast majority of that number is suicides.

Re: Better to buy a gun at a gunshow or at a store?
honestly, if you are buying something for home protection, buy a shotgun.
Also, unless you have friends who can show you the ropes, it might be smart to cultivate a relationship with a local gun shop/range so you can ask follow up questions.

This. Just think of how much nicer it would feel to blow an intruder away with a shotgun.
If someone breaks into your home, you dont wanna put neat little holes in them. You wanna make em real messy.

Contrary to what gun shop owners will tell you, don't buy a revolver as your first gun for home defense. You'll be dead in minutes with a 6-shot chamber.
