They both are the same. UK and Australia seem to use "amongst" more often, while Americans use "among." So, yes, it has to deal with UK/US thing. The same could be applied with while/whilst.

To me, "amongst" sounds kind of annoying than "among", but meh.

Anyone else have to stop and think for a second about whether to use effects or affect?
These words are weird. They start out confusing. Then they become easy when your middle school English teacher tells you, "effect is a noun and affect is a verb." Then they become confusing again your freshman year of college when you take Psych and learn about a "flat affect" and take some government or sociology class where they talk about "effecting change." Then eventually, hopefully they become easy again, but not necessarily.

The language is called 'English', not 'American'. The Brits invented the language ad Americans adapted it (read: dumbed it down), thus creating their own vernacular. How can you say that the Brits are trying to sound smarter?

To answer the question, the words 'amongst' and 'whilst' are older English words that happen to still be used, unlike words like 'thou', 'ye' and 'unto'.
