Let's just forget the fact that he's the youngest starting QB in the league. Or the fact that his WR have drop passes or that his RB ran for 34 yards today or that they're facing one of the better defenses in the league. Or the fact he has had 3 different offensive co-ordinators in 3 years or the fact that Brandon Lloyd has been the best WR he's ever worked with (and he's only the 3rd receiver on the SKins.)
Look, you want to know why he was number one overall?
A) Leinart didn't declare for the Draft.
B) He's tall, fast and smart ( I think he finished School in 2 years with a very high GPA.)
The offensive line did a good job protecting for Smith today but the last two weeks he has been getting hammered. And Gore hasn't been able to get run game going which would relieve Alex of some of that pressure.
Now I know some bandwagoners will bring up Jason Campbell, and while I like him, let's not forget that offense is loaded. Portis, Moss, Cooley, Randel El, Brandon Lloyd and a much better line.
Once Gore picks up his game, I fully expect Alex to be back where he left off last year.
psst...... Its only week 3. And I thought he played very well coming from a steelers fan. We just blitzed him all day, he was moving the chains ut he couldnt convert. There's something about him that makes me think hes gonna be great.
Alex Smith will do just fine. Give him a few more seasons. He was basically thrown to the wolves with no real QB to mentor him. He'll come into his own, and if he doesn't break out this season, he will for sure the next.
I'm still not sold on him being a worthy # 1 pick, but he's a good QB built for this league. Give him time.
A better question to ask would be - how good is the WR core he has?
