This team is a LONG way from contending even for the playoffs. Yes, they'll improve by default if Kobe leaves, but not to the point of being relevant. None of their young guys are blue chips. They need more talent, plain and simple. Only way to get it is to pick high in the lottery. Kobe will ensure this as long as he is on the court.

They need to re-sign Tankbe for at LEAST another two years guaranteed, with a team option for a third.

The only way to get back up, is to go all the way down. And only Kobe can take them there.
