I think what people are getting mixed up here is that this trade was solely a value trade. What does Toronto value more? Two second-round picks in '09 and '10 or a chance to give a talented (potential-wise) disgruntled player a chance to earn a spot in this league?
On the flip side, who does Detroit value more, Carlos Delfino or the ability to re-sign Chauncey Billups? This trade gives Detroit enough wiggle room and cap space to be able to comfortably sign Billups without endangering themselves with the luxury tax (especially if they plan on using their MLE on Grant Hill or Mo Pete).
Yes, Delfino hasn't shown much in the league yet, but the potential that he could show something is why this trade was successful. Detroit saw that Toronto had about 2 mill in cap space and made a trade based purely on cap ramifications. Easy as that.
