Yes, they are fearsome killing machines of smaller animals but new research shows just how insanely terrified they are of orcas. There's no indication of this level of terror by other shark species of orcas. Great white shark's favorite prey, seals and sea lions, also don't show anywhere near this level of fear of them.

Radio collared great whites that have had their territories intruded by orcas have instantly sunk hundreds of feet and travelled over 1000 miles with out stopping. Radio collared GWs have also shown that they will abandon prime hunting grounds, and no return for a year or more, if orcas show up and linger only a few hours.

In research published Tuesday in Nature, scientists found white sharks not only fled from killer whales when they arrived at a marine sanctuary near San Francisco but cleared out until the next season.

"When confronted by orcas, white sharks will immediately vacate their preferred hunting ground and will not return for up to a year, even though the orcas are only passing through," said Salvador Jorgensen, senior research scientist at Monterey Bay Aquarium and lead author of the study.

Minutes after orcas appeared to feed on elephant seals, researchers said white sharks began swimming offshore or crowding together at other seal colonies farther along the coast.

Some of the white sharks that usually dominate the sanctuary stretch more than 18 feet long, said Monterey Bay Aquarium scientist Scot Anderson

"After orcas show up, we don't see a single white shark and there are no more kills," Anderson said.

There was a good doc on killer whales in captivity. Sea world or one of those companies were buying orcas with a history of attacking people on the cheap. They had some videos of people getting bit and messed with. This one kept dragging the guy by the foot deeper and deeper until he almost drown.

Seal colonies dont instantly turn tail and relocate the instant Great Whites show up. They take their lumps. Yes the seal colonies can take refuge on land but great whites migrate at 3000ft, and I'm sure they can dive much deeper. Orcas rarely dive deeper than 1000ft. And the big great whites can get to 4-5000lbs, female orcas average around 6-8000lbs. It was a solo female that literally tore that great white in San Francisco a new asshole and slurped out it's liver.
