to me, the film relies far too heavily on shock value. the first time i watched it, i was left feeling drained/shocked. i thought it was amazing. the second time i watched it, i realised how trite and heavy-handed the emotional exploitation is; it's about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the head.

to me, the literary equivalent is 'brave new world'. ostensibly great, but lacks substance under the surface.

Trainspotting wasn't that great either. It was just a product of the times. Grundge-Era gen-x nobodies with heroin on the rise and the AIDS scare. All it's publicity and hype was based off those cultural aspects.

Only heard about the movie through the theme song. Probably going to see it.

Spot on.

When you actually know that the double dong is coming, it isn't nearly as perturbing.

The acting is also nothing to write home about, outside of the brilliant performance put in by the mother character.

All in all, it is a good movie that I would recommend everyone see once, but I'm not sure it is going to have the staying power to be anything more than a cult classic.

It definitely doesn't stack up when comparing it to truly superb films, in every aspect, like No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, for example.

I feel like The Wrestler is Aronofsky's finest work that I have seen. Then again, I haven't checked out his entire catalog to date... just most of it.
