He makes them more money on the team than off.

That's not a gamble one should take.

Amnesty isn't as big as people think. It doesn't matter to big market teams. It's designed to help the small market teams that are stuck with these max contracts when their players no longer can produce, imagine Amare's contract on a smaller team.

obviously you have to talk to kobe first to see if he'll be back next season. If he's not going to play at all/most of the year it would be better for both parties to amnesty him and then resign him after a year. It saves them a TON of money in luxury tax penalties, plus depending on what happens with their other free agents it gives them the ability to get some new pieces for when Kobe returns.

It all comes down to if you want to make the move fans want, or the right basketball decision going forward. Do you really want to see the Lakers lose dwight, not amnesty Kobe, and then play a whole season with bottom of the barrel scrubs+Pau and Nash? Even without Dwight on the books they can't get under the projected cap even if they amnesty Metta or he refuses his team option. They would be at about 70 million under contract and the cap is going to be around 60 million.

Heck if Kobe isn't going to be able to play next year give him an asst. coach job till he's healthy then resign him! As you can see I'm not very confident on Kobe coming back and playing a meaningful amount of games next year

That's basically franchise suicide. They're better off being in financial hell over doing that to the Lakers right now.

Well, it's interesting simply because they could do it, if they really wanted to, then blame it on him and fire him. Then they'd be free of everything and he'd be a scapegoat.

Every time I think of Kobe's ACL I think of Mike playing him like he did and know that he did it on purpose to teach Kobe a lesson. What a terrible thing to do. I don't hate Kobe, but he does piss me off at times. Still, the fact that he had to go out on a career ending-level injury (at the very least, it's possible if he plays again he won't be the same and that'll be the last big memory) because of some ego battle with a coach... is ridiculous.

The fact that they're sticking with him after that, too, wow...

Mark Cuban would love to have the Lakers amnesty Kobe because the Mavs are under the cap and can then make a bid on him.

Dirk and Kobe going out together with a few rings on the way.

Dirk and Kobe are terrible fits for each other. both are long range shooters with bad defense. Cuban would be dumb to become the Lakers of 2012-13 in 13-14 with old ass dirt players with bad defense

Not when they are bringing in 200 million with Kobe.

A 100 million dollar profit isn't monopoly money either.

Kobe's merch sales at this point in his career are netting the Lakers 24+ million??

If they are , good for him. I just dont see who's buying kobe shoes and jerseys now. Hes played like 8 games in the last 2 years. The stans all have their Kobe stuff. I doubt young kids are reaching for Kobe gear anymore.
