Default Opinion on who the top 5 RBs ever are?

Discuss. Not sure if this forum has a thread about this yet. If it does, my bad.

Walter Payton
Gale Sayers
Barry Sanders
LaDainian Tomlinson
Marshall Faulk

HM: Adrian Peterson, Eric Dickerson, O.J., Emmitt Smith, Earl Campbell

It's hard to place Jim Brown for me because I have only seen highlights so I gotta just take others at their word

Made that last year, but two seasons have past. Peterson was #5 on it then, if I redid this hed probably be a spot or two higher now.

Its basically a formula that combines equal parts bulk stats/efficiency stats/accolades

1. Jim Brown
2. Barry Sanders
3. Emmitt Smith
4. Walter Payton
5. Adrian Peterson

Tomlinson just missed at 6...arguably greatest prime ever

Just read it, good analysis. Also appreciate the love you showed some players who get under appreciated (E. James and Frank Gore).

I'm from Chicago so I'm biased towards Sweetness. Lucky enough to catch him from early mid 80s on but I was really young and so I didn't appreciate his greatness until I understood the game better as I got older. I missed his peak which was in the 70s...he had the ultimate combo of power, speed and agility that I have ever seen. He did most of his damage on a shitty Bears team (mid 70s to early 80s) and every D was keyed on stopping him. He was the total package, he could catch the ball, block and even pass. Tough as nails and humble, the epitome of Chitown greatness along with MJ. I'm sorry but if Payton had Emmitt Smith's OLine, he would easily have a couple thousand more yards, I don't even have Smith on my top 5 GOAT RBs list and it pissed me off when Smith broke Payton's all time rushing record. Died way too young...

RIP

This is my list, players that I've seen so Sayers or Brown aren't here...from mid 80s on.

1 Payton

2 Sanders
3 Peterson
4 Tomlinson
5 Dickerson

That list seems fair although I'd boot AD in favor of Tomlinson or Faulk. Their versatility and all-around ability was a precursor what the RB position to is today.

I find Barry a little overrated. Not that he's not top 5. He is. But I wouldn't say GOAT. He had a shit QB in an offense that relied heavily on the run. They had a pretty good O-line. I believe that Barry also had one of the biggest YPL of all time.

Jim Brown is my GOAT. YPC for a career is outstanding.
I also think Terrell Davis is severely underrated. Peak he may be the best of all time.

Some true football fans would really have arguments in this thread , but these are my guys...

1) Payton
2) Brown
3) Sanders
4) Campbell
5) Dickerson

*6) OJ simpson , he killed , so he was a murder in the run game.

Hard to rank, I didn't even see most of them which makes it even harder to rank but also shows how different the game is these days. Running backs haven't necessarily gotten worse, just not utilized as they once were. Fullbacks are basically extinct in today's game.

With that said, guys I see in the discussion in chronological order:

Brown
Payton
Sanders
Smith
Tomlinson
Peterson

Simpson, Sayers, Dorsett, Campbell, Dickerson, and Faulk are all up there as well when looking at prime level play. Bo is up there when looking at talent. Those 6 guys to me are the premier running backs of their generation so that's mainly why I have them at the top + longevity is pretty good for those 6 as well. Smith's longevity is insane even when factoring the o-line he had the luxury of playing for.

Don't know if Bell will get there but I can definitely see Elliot and Gurley get there when it's all said and done, although I thought CJ2K would as well and we saw how his career ended.
