OP,
Do you know anything about the HOF? At least this thread will be educational to you. You might be surprised that there are a ton of people in the BASKETBALL HOF that have never had anything to do with the NBA. Players, coaches and more. It's a HOF for the entire sport, not for the NBA.

Ralph was pretty damn good player in the NBA until he got hurt. It's not like he was great in college and went into the NBA and sucked. Very unique player, it would be interesting to see him play in today's game. He was a 7'3" shooting guard pretty much.

Sabonis was way past his prime by the time he got into the NBA and had career averages of 12 points and 7 rebounds. Good luck finding one person on this planet who would even think of saying Sabonis doesn't deserve to be in the HOF. He was a sure thing HOFer even without playing in the NBA.

Remember when Ralph did that animated TV show about him and his family?

"The Sampsons". Took place in Shelbyville.

Just recently uploaded by "NBA".

I think most of the posters here are too young to realize how incredible he was, pre-injuries.

He was legit. top-10 best of all time material.

So was Sabonis for that matter.

Ralph Sampson is one of the most talented players I ever saw play basketball. He was phenomenal.

His pro career was disappointing: he drifted between positions and then got injured. But, on his day, he was a joy to watch. Ultra athletic, extremely tall, great range, could handle the ball.... he was basically a 7'4" version of Kevin Garnett.

His college career was one of the best ever.

He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Basketball doesn't begin and end with the NBA.

If based only on his NBA career, absolutely not. His college career is certainly good enough to get him into a seperate college based based HOF. The thing is most (male) players (not coaches, owners or other contributors) get assessed on the totality of their playing career. For example, Christian Laettner has what is considered one of the great college careers but was only a good but non-exceptional pro and thus rightly isn't in. Most great college players don't get in with only a solid pro career (Tom Gola being the notable exception).

If the Hall of Fame is about noteworthiness I would think Sampson should be in, if it's about how much he contributed over his career, then I'd say no.

I'd be more inclined to say he was HOF if it was clearly just injuries that did him in, but after an excellent rookie year, after Hakeems arrival, despite increased minutes (and whilst staying healthy) his fg% came down, his rebounds came down, his blocks came down and his turnovers went up (4 a game in his 2nd year). Maybe it was partially to do with his role, but even so his pre-injury pro years aren't that special.

What you did in college should have no bearing on getting you into the HOF. Who cares what you did in amateur sports. What should matter is what you did as a professional whether is NBA or European or what not as it is the BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME and not the NBA Hall of Fame. College shouldn't mean shit though.

Yup. It's ridiculous.

Hey, I know a couple of players who dominated the (semi-pro) Dutch league, which is realistically probably the same level of play as NCAA. So when are they getting in the hall?

nothing but respect for Ralph

btw in his HOF speech, he didn't name Hakeem when thanking guys he's played with (though I guess he has no reason to)

the one time he mentioned him was when he wondered what it would've been like to have played with MJ instead, had Houston drafted him

did they get along well? is it a jealousy/bitterness thing perhaps? or maybe I'm just overreading this

I did notice he bought up a lot of players from his era except his teammate Akeem. He bought his other teammates from the Warrios Mullin though ... Kareem, Doc, Barkley, Jordan, Thomas, Magic, Worthy, McHale, Bird, Parish, Gilmore ... no Akeem. Maybe he asked him to present him and Akeem turned him down ... who knows.
