Default Patrick Chambers to coach Penn State basketball

The AP reports:

Penn State’s search to replace former basketball coach Ed DeChellis is apparently down to one candidate in Boston University’s Pat Chambers.

Milwaukee’s Rob Jeter on Friday issued a statement saying he listened to the Nittany Lions but was excited about coaching the Panthers next season. Duquesne’s Ron Everhart withdrew his name from consideration on Thursday night after interviewing earlier this week.

That leaves Chambers, the former Villanova assistant who led Boston to its first America East title and NCAA tournament in nine seasons this past spring. The Terriers lost in the second round to Kansas.

Yahoo reports:

A lack of basketball pedigree and an unwillingness to spend lavishly on its program likely prevented Penn State from landing a marquee head coach, but the Nittany Lions appear to be close to reeling in an up-and-coming candidate.

Boston University coach Patrick Chambers has been offered the Penn State job and is considering whether to accept, The Harrisburg Patriot-News reported Friday. Chambers, 39, led the Terriers to the NCAA tournament last March and compiled a 42-28 record in two seasons with the program.

The appeal of Chambers stems mostly from his recruiting ties to Philadelphia and New England, two regions the Nittany Lions must draw from if they're going to be successful in the Big Ten. Chambers spent five years at Villanova from 2004 to 2009 as both director of basketball operations and as an assistant coach, enabling him to build strong relationships with high school and club coaches in the city.

ESPN reports:

Penn State has hired Boston University's Patrick Chambers as its next coach.

A posting on the website for Boston University confirmed the move late Friday afternoon.

"Penn State basketball begins a new era today," Nittany Lions athletic director Tim Curley said in a statement, "and Patrick Chambers ushers in that era with proven success, an appreciation of and commitment to Penn State ideals, and the energy and enthusiasm required to compete at the highest level."

Chambers told the AP he signed a five-year deal, but he and a team spokesman said financial terms were confidential. An open records report released last week by Penn State showed former coach Ed DeChellis earned nearly $807,000 in compensation in 2010.

Pat Chambers got stabbed with a broken shot glass one time. True story.
