    Default Stationary dribbling drills and protecting the ball

    Hey guys

    So those stationary dribbling drills i.e.

    Do these tend to help with dribbling the ball with full speed? Or is that a separate drill altogether?

    In terms of protecting the ball, is the best way really is to put your body in between the ball and defender? along with squatting down.

    Also how much can you use your offhand when dribbling, in terms of protecting the ball?

    Can't see the videos now but stationary dribbling makes you more comfortable handling the ball and makes you handle stronger. Use you off hand to block the reach or if you are playing at a higher level you can get a little more aggressive. I just play pickup so if someone reaches I grab their hand and throw it out of my way

    Tennis ball drills seem to help with your off hand

    Dribbling the ball as hard as possible in a stationary position does help with dribbling at full speed, however to get the best practice you will want to dribble the ball as hard as possible while running. I know I lose the ball the most when I'm running fast, looking for an open man.

    The way I usually protect the ball is to turn to my side and dribble the ball alongside my leg so they can't reach low, making sure my elbow is in tight so they can't reach around and poke it out either. You always want to use your off hand to keep the defender away so they can't get too close to rip you. You can use it as much as you want as a shield as long as you don't completely shove the defender or slap their hand away. Though in streetball it doesn't matter, but it might get you into a scrap.

    This depends on the level you play at and the refs who are calling the game. I forget how Ganon Baker breaks it down but you can get more aggressive as you move up. In college you will see guys smack the defenders hand away. OF course the pro's grab the defenders wrist or hand and push it away.
