He's dying.
The last place I'd want to be in his situation is on a stage in front of hundreds of people. He has a lot of guts. I won't go too far into it, but I know the way chemo and radiation impacts your life and the fact that he is up there talking coherently is a testament to his will.

Yeah, the part about the train was a bit superfluous, but you know, he's still the man and deserves to be up there.
On a side note, the ESPYs really favor basketball.
