This is a one-sided way of looking at things. Those "freeloading parasites" had a pretty huge impact on making the German "economic output" what is was, and the incentive structure of the European Union did indeed encourage them to engage in profligate spending. The Union is actually set up in a way that allows nations to trade their independence for some doe; and that has always been the fundamental tradeoff of EU membership; we saw it with the 2004 Enlargement, when the Eurocrats bullied the newly independent states into joining the Union by barring them from the prosperity of their markets until they handed over power to Brussels, and crushed much of their native industry.

You cannot have an economic and political Union without being willing to make transfers of wealth. If the Germans aren't willing to do this, then they should stop demonising people for not being and acting like Germans, and give up their supranational political experiment. People in Italy and Greece and Portugal don't want to live like people in Germany or the Netherlands, and that is at the root of the whole problem.
