I agree that I'd prefer the standard "take a group and advance the top two or three to the finals" procedure, but I'll take the six competitor east vs. west format. We've seen something similar before (Desmond Mason and Jason Richardson battled against one another pre-finals in the early '00's and it still ended up being fun).

Also, more news, if you guys didn't already know. According to a Fox Sports newscaster on Twitter:

Hakeem Olajuwon told me he will serve as a judge for the slam-dunk contest in Houston on All-Star Saturday Night.
To spell things out, that seems to lend credence to the return of true judges.

East is going to shit on the west, Jeremy Evans(worse dunk contest winner EVER) Bledsoe & Faried...really?

The East has probably the top 3 dunkers in the league...

this contest sounds more like a team thing than individual performance. hope it ain't like that.

Some really good dunkers this year. Green, White should be insane, hopefully don't let us all down. Bledsoe has some crazy ups. Faried seems like a weird choice, crazy athletic but hasn't shown much creativity in game besides catching some crazy ally's. He's a passionate dude so I imagine he'll get up for contest which is really all you can ask for, not sure how it translates.

    Yeah i don't like this.

This is another gimmicky thing like the Dunk Wheel (when Steve Francis had to do a Dr. J "Rock the Cradle" dunk and he can't even palm a bball ).

All we need is some good dunkers and a basketball. F all of this East vs West bullshit.

In the world of dunking, James White and Gerald Green are the star players.

Part of the reason why Carter's contest was so stupendous was because he was a budding star.

I kind of agree that it's better when you have an up and coming superstar in these types of contest.

Although White about to destroy everyone.

Jeremy Evans' choice of dunks last year were just awful. That, however, has no bearing on this contest.

They could've just done a two team showdown,

    DeRozan, Ross, Gay

    Vs.

    Griffin, Bledsoe, Jordan

I guess it's easy to see now why Lebron wouldn't want to do it...i mean he'd definitely lose to James White (unless White can't jump anymore) and would probably lose to Gerald Green and Terrance Ross as well.

That'd be a huge hit to his superhuman status...to end up getting beat by three bench players who score about 9 points per game combined.

Splitting hairs, but Francis actually had to attempt to duplicate Terence Stansbury's Statue of Liberty 360, which is obviously ridiculous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5_oekKLtFE#t=2m55s
