Default McHale admits talking with 76ers

Sid Hartman, Star Tribune

Yes, Kevin McHale is making a strong bid to make a trade that would bring Philadelphia superstar Allen Iverson to the Timberwolves, even though team owner Glen Taylor says he can't understand how a deal could be made where he would wind up getting rid of $16 million in salaries and replace them with the former league MVP, who is being paid that much for 2005-06 and $18 million for 2006-07.

But look for Taylor to approve the trade if McHale can work out the figures.

"They are going to trade him to somebody," McHale said. "We are one of the teams talking to them."

McHale has a good relationship with Billy King, president of the 76ers, having been involved with him in the four-team trade that brought Latrell Sprewell to the Wolves three years ago.

The Sixers have lost 14 of the past 16 games, and apparently Iverson, who has started in seven consecutive All-Star Games and is averaging 32.1 points per game, has asked for the trade and hinted he would like to play with Kevin Garnett.

The rumors have Wolves No. 1 draft choice Randy Foye, Eddie Griffin, Ricky Davis and Troy Hudson going to the 76ers for Iverson.

Told of the rumor, Garnett lit up. "Bring it on, I love The Answer," Garnett said with a big smile. "We welcome A.I. with open arms. Where is Kevin McHale? C'mon, boy. I can't think of anybody who wouldn't want to play with him."

Taylor did look at the many empty seats in the Target Center on Friday night and had only one explanation: "We have to win to draw."

Taylor added, "We have better players than our record."

An indication that there is a little pressure on coach Dwane Casey, too.

Well I guess even though the owner said no they still called. But from about 11:30 PM Sunday night it was down to Boston, and Bobcats from reports, but of course the Sixers gave until monday to submit offers so maybe those other teams will submit a better offer, and be back in the race for AI.
