I have this on my website but I'll put it here as well. I had this amazing experience with ankle weights. I really really wanted to increase my vertical leap (even though it was above average) and I was open to all kinds of crazy ideas. I did so many things to list here but one of them, obviously was ankle weights.
So what I put them on and did 20 explosions/explosive jumps (jump as high as you can by bringing your knees to your chest). And then I'd rest for 2 minutes and do another set of 20 reps. And when I took them off I could jump probably 4/5 inches higher. I know it sounds crazy, so go ahead and try it. But as you know, there is a high probability that you can get water on your knee. I didn't, fortunately, because I was doing for couple of days without consulting my doctor. I didn't know that I could get water on my knee so I consulted no one. But you definitely should. And here is the bad news.
That increased vert is only temporarily. Of course. There's always a catch right. The things is you have to keep doing those jumps for weeks or maybe months and you'll surely see improvement. Not just in how higher you can jump but you'll notice that you can jump easier than before. On my website I have a lot of info about jumping higher. It's all free so you can check that out if you want. It's at http://www.best-basketball-tips.com
Hope that helps,
