George Karl is insane. He is holding JR Smith back. Karl is the only guy who starts an obscure player just to sit him 5 minutes in. What is the point? Johnson, Diawara, now Jones...make it stop. It's JR's time now.
Re: Dahntay Jones to start....you've got to be kidding me
every junior college in the country has guys who can do what dahntay jones can do- run & jump is not enough in the nba- if the nugs didnt sign jones there is no gaurantee at all that he is even in the nba this year
the whole idea behind spreading the floor is cancelled out when one of the players does not need covered outside- it just doesnt make sense
why does karl not understand that you DONT start your 12th man?- no matter how easy these gm's are trying to make it on karl he still wont do it- continuing to purposefully handicapp his own team is inexcusable
Re: Dahntay Jones to start....you've got to be kidding me
dahntay jones is horrible, he gets rejected all the time, can't hit an outside shot to save his life, and can't dribble a basketball even if he's looking at it. he can run the floor, he can dunk if no one is in his way, and i guess he plays defense (although i think people call him a defensive player just because he sucks at offense, not because he's anything special on d). this was not a good way to wake up this morning!!
Pop starts finley and sits him after 5 minutes for ginobili....I really don't see this as that big of a deal. AI's 40+ minutes are gone, you know JR will see a BIG chunk of those.
And there's nothing wrong with trying to start games defensive-minded. They can get a little lead then JR & co can come in and shut them down offensively.
"Nuggets coach George Karl expects J.R. Smith to blossom alongside Chauncey Billups, but said defensive-specialist Dhantay Jones might start for the immediate future.
Karl added that one motivation for the trade was clearing minutes for Smith at shooting guard. "Cutting [Iverson] to 34 to 35 would have been a challenge," Karl said. Smith's owners should be delighted -- he will eventually start, and his minutes and production should soar with Billups in Denver."
What's the problem?

So can JR, but to put Dahntay ahead of JR is insane!!!Although Dahntay showed some potential in summer league and his defense is a bit better, but that doesn't mean he can be ahead of JR let alone be in starting five.
JR is overall a much better player with great potential and talent, but he can't evolve as a player sitting on the bench. He has to get more playing time, especially now that Billups came. He's gonna bring leadership to this team plus he has playoff experience. And if JR can play alongside Melo and Billups i think he can learn alot.I don't know what the **** is Karl thinkin.
Re: Dahntay Jones to start....you've got to be kidding me
I think that Dahntay Jones is better served as an energy player right now because he has given it for the past few games. He'll definitely help out on the bench with Kleiza and Andersen.
I know Jones can play DEFENSE and Throw it down, but JR can easily replace A.I. Now that JR can drive to the lane, he will be dangerous.
Karl better start JR because it ain't gonna fly with a lot of us.
No disrespect to Jones, but he is unproven and we know what JR can do.

Just because you start doesn't mean you always get to play more minutes. I dont know why all of you somehow think JR will play 15 minutes per game just because he isn't starting. As I said before, it's very similar to Ginobili in SA. You need that spark off the bench, and then play 30-35 minutes from there.
You can't put your best 5 out there to start, then you have no contribution from your bench. Think about Phil Jackson starting Radmonovic and having Odom off the bench. Obviously Odom is a better player, but they need that energy midway through the game.
I think it's more important to bring a defensive intensity in the first minutes of the game, and Billups and Jones is a fierce combo.
I think Karl has been doing a much better job coaching this season than any other season.

Smith will have a Ginobili type role. But if he doesnt then
