maybe it's for the best. his stuff's been pretty much downhill since spirited away, which itself was a cut below mononoke IMO.

usually an artist has only so much piss and vinegar in them.. after that, it's probably more pragmatic to teach or assist others in making works. even if he retires for good this time, he could still be an invaluable resource for others in ghibli or whatnot.

Ponyo was good. It's a children's movie though. I think people wanted it to have more story, but it's supposed to be a picture book basically. Heard the new movie is very good.

that's true, and it should be given leeway for that. but like "howl," i just don't get the idea dude has any significant stories left to tell.

when you make crisp, focused movies like porco rosso, castle in the sky, mononoke, etc etc, the bar gets set pretty high, i guess. his last couple ones seemed to retain all his style and imagery, but it just didn't feel like there was anything behind the curtain.

You guys should play Ni No Kuni. It's literally a game in his world and art style.

it's $41 for my DS through amazon, but i don't read / speak japanese.

zero desire to buy a PS3, either. but hmm... emulator, maybe?

I honestly forgot there was even a handheld game. I have a PS3 so that didn't even cross my mind .

Basically every movie he made was good except for Ponyo. Ponyo had amazing animation but shitty characters and story.

    Porco Rosso
    Nausica
    Mononoke
    Spirited Away
    Howl's Moving Castle
    Totoro
    Castle in the Sky
    Kiki's Delivery Service
    Arriety
    ALL CLASSICS

Whisper of the Heart from the same studio is AMAZING, Miyazaki wrote the script I believe.

His son is crap, Earthsea was horrible!

Honestly I only liked Castle of Cagliostro and Princess Mononoke. Castle in the Sky is pretty good decent though.
