2000- Carter clear PER advantage 23.4 to 20 (though both players on same team and McGrady not getting to take the shots, can't say confidently who was the better player, but Carter had the better year)
2001- Carter very narrow PER advantage 25 to 24.9 Tie
2002-T-Mac clear PER advantage 25.1 to 20.5
2003-T-Mac clear PER advantage 30.3 to 21.9
2004-T-Mac clear PER advantage 25.3 to 20
2005- Both 22.9 Tie
2006- T-Mac 21.9 Carter 21.6 T-Mac perhaps very slightly better but Carter has the better/more impactful year in terms of staying healthy
2007- T-Mac advantage 23.2 to 21.8
--------------------------------------------- (end of their primes)
2008- Carter 18.8 T-Mac 18.4 Carter with marginal stats advantage and played more games
2009- Carter clear advantage 19.3 to 16.3
2010- Carter clear advantage 17.1 to 12.2 T-Mac a physical wreck plays only 30 games 6 in Houston who have given up on him, and 24 on the waiting for LeBron Knicks.
2011-McGrady 14.9 Carter 14.8. Carter playing more minutes. Tie? It's hard to care at this point.
2012- Both 13.6 Carter again playing more.

PER isn't the be all and end all, but it's a very good indicator unless there are mitigating factors that it can't account for.
Counting seasons tell you very little indeed about the better player it's about winning titles (though measuring individuals by team titles isn't a great idea). Post prime neither of them were going to win you a title or shift your odds that significantly (though Carter 2008-10 could have been an okay role player on offense).
When they were in with a shot with really influencing the fortunues of their teams McGrady had a three year peak where he was vastly better than Carter and it was no comparison. McGrady over that period was remarkable, Carter merely good. Carter only advantage of a similar size (to 2002 and 2004 anyway) was 2010 outside their primes and T-Mac a physical wreck. Carter never got a clear win in their primes once Tracy left Toronto.

Agreed, I'm just checking out which years though.
VC gets the edge for '07 though, or at least he should.
i take him in '01 because he was excellent at getting his in the flow of the game that year without christie and mcgrady that year he saw extra attention from defenses and it didnt affect his efficiency much
mcgrady's numbers might be a little inflated because he was literally their entire offense that year (Grant Hill injured)
if anyone knows where to find usage rates from that year i'd be interested

ah the cousin rivalry. Their games against each other were pretty damn entertaining. and it also gives you a picture how they both approached the games. I agree that Orlando TMac was the overall best player, while VC was more durable, consistent, and successful in the postseason throughout his career.
