Default Very serious discussion - Andrew Bynum..

1. When does Andrew become eligible for an extension [meaning the real contract, not a 1 year tendor]

2. how do the lakers deal with him? [especially if its this summer] Lakers are playing amazingly, but we know how good bynum could be

3. if we win the chip this year then we have proven that the core of kb lo pau is #1 and that we should not break them apart

Kobe=20+ mill
Lamar= 14mill expiring contract
Pau= 14 mill ??? im not sure about this

so where does that leave $ for Bynum - sasha - turiaf

not to mention Dfish for 2 more years

*its the playoffs and we should be focused on that, but with all the sucsess i cant help but wonder what steps management will take, since they are all our players we get bird rights -so how much luxury tax is buss willing to pay to have a championship team + the addition of bynum ect......

First off i'll assume the lakers will be do everything in their power to keep him.

now he is under contract through next year where he'll be up for a qualifying offer.

he can either except it and be paid roughly 3.5 million and become a restricted free agent the following year which would mean he would be open to hearing other teams offers, which the lakers could match or turn down.

or he can turn down the qualifying offer, making him a unrestricted free agent the following season which would mean he's free to take any contract anywhere and the lakers can only hope to out bid.

the lakers can also offer him a max qualifying offer which is a max contract
for 6 years with 10% annual raises. this is most likely what the lakers will offer up, because it has more rules imposed on it making it harder for other teams to compete than if he was a regular restricted free angent. the max he can be offered is around 12 million for the first year, though i'm sure negotiations will start lower than that and a compromise reached somewhere around 9 or 10 million.

how he plays next season will determine in large degree how the lakers treat that off season and what andrew expects from them.

all other lakers are under contract and as such subject to bird rights so the cap has no effect on how the lakers deal with their contract... the only limiting factor is how much the lakers want to spend and as we have seen over all the years buss has no problem spending the money if it keeps the lakers in the title hunt, he only backs off in years where they see a title run is not in the cards ,or in shaqs case where he feels the player is not giving max effort for max pay...

Lamar wont be back for 14 million.... although something in and around 10 sounds right.

Radman will never get extended at his current contract.

That should HELP the salary cap in years to come.

wont matter hes got a few more yrs as does luke

so figure
kobe+Pau+lamar [@10 mill] =45 mill

+bynum[@10 mill] =55

+Sasha [@3-4 million???] + turiaf [@3-4 mill??] =62 mill

not including luke and vlad at 6 mill a yr = 74 mill

74 mill for our top 8 players [not including farmar/ariza and any draft picks and pick ups]..

The Lakers are in great shape with respects to your concerns.

As GTS pointed out, he's locked up for next year at 2.77 mil, then the Lakers hold all the options for 09/10. They will be able to match any other teams offer, are the only team in the NBA that can give him a 6 yr instead of 5 yr contract, and can go over the cap by any amount since they have his bird rights (i think its 3 yrs with the same team).

Same goes for Sasha and Turiaf, the Lakers have all the same options.

The real challenge with the Lakers cap issue begins with Odoms 14 million contract which expires at the end of next season.

well they don't hold all the cards, they have most of them but there is a joker in the deck...lol

andrew can turn down a qualifying offer, and become an unrestricted free agent, at which point the only way the lakers keep him is by out bidding as opposed to matching, see if the lakers were to outbid a team it doesn't lock andrew into excepting, where when he's a resricted they just have to match and he is locked in... that's why they won't give him any offer but a max qualifying offer..
