Gasol is a respectable defender with high block numbers. 3 blk a game buring the playoffs. Alot of his block come off his second effort. Great recovery reaction after he get put in the popcorn machine.
Bynum doesn't have much of a arguement against Gasol.
Bynum is a weak man to man defender. Great rebound number only beacuse of this length. Not a great help defender. His blocks solely come from the guy he is defending. Never the help type of block ala kobe flying from across the way to be hte second line of defense.
Bynum has soft hands around the basket, but gasol is too good in this category to default over to Bynum. And i am talking bynums future here.
Bynum's man to man D wasn't a problem. The problem was his pick n roll defense and thats something he improved upon before his injury.
I don't know where you get that Bynum is a weak secondary defender from, from what I remember thats where his blocks usually come from and guys always think twice about entering after they get denied the first few times.
He does a solid job on some of the premiere scorers that play his position. When Dwight howard was having a monstrous season to begin with, Bynum forced Howard to make some bad decisions and lakers almost won that first game against orlando.
Blocks are usually an overrated stat in a sense that its only recorded based on if you block a shot or not, but it doesnt necessarily mean that the whole defensive possession was successful. Noone accounts for second efforts or if the team on defense ended up recovering the possession after the shot was blocked.
what a center is usually judged upon is rebounding and impact. Pau is not exactly a guy that people are afraid of attacking. Bynum on the other hand is much stronger than Pau and more athletic.
Basically, Bynum > Pau on defense.
