what about a guy like Tony Battie?

Tony Battie makes about $5.7 Million for the 08-09 season. So the trade exception and cash might not get you there. Although Im not sure how much the maximum amount of cash you can offer. USually you see draft picks going for $3M but I feel like I've read that the maximum you can offer is $500K.

No way in hell you get Johnson, Landry, Villanueva, May, and probably even Hunter for simply a trade exception.

Well, you're half right. The exception can be included with picks and/or cash compensation.
Steven Hunter to me is the probably the easiest of the list to acquire because:
1) He's got an easy enough contract to work with.
2) Coach Karl rarely puts him in for garbage time letalone meaningful minutes, so he's not someone who is irreplaceable.
3) The Nuggets will more than likely re-sign JR Smith which will mean more money on their cap and more in debt to the Luxury tax that they'll be in. Stevey's contract is costing them double. Do you think they're thrilled to pay twice what a guy is making when he doesn't even have a role on the team??
